Dear readers,

If you have a Thai bank book together and this is in both names, can you simply withdraw the money when the partner dies if you show the bank the death certificate?

With kind regards,

Danny

If the bank book is in two names, both can withdraw money, I wouldn't know why you would have to show a death certificate when withdrawing money, you don't have to show proof of life either.

Then it can differ per bank, so ask your bank. But I often read that one may ask for a court order and I have also experienced that in the vicinity. In the event of death, the entire balance will (possibly) be blocked.

Since an en/or account is of no use for extending the residence status, I have so far refrained from an en/or account. My partner and I each have an account. And when I couldn't go to the bank myself because of disability, I handed over the debit card so she could pay for the household.

If it's an "or" in signature, no problem, if it's an "and" (two signatures needed) then it's running

    There are 2 joint accounts;

An AND AND bill where you both have to appear.

The other is OR OR then each can act separately.

If the bank book is in both names .
I have two running on both names, one at TMB and one at Tanachart bank.
It doesn't matter if my person or my Thai spouse dies. Both I and my Thai husband can withdraw money as well as deposit money (my stepson regularly does this as a thank you to his mother and stepfather).
That is also the reason why we have two bank books on both names .
Because you don't have that, and in case of sudden death on my part.
Indeed , just like in Holland , everything is blocked .
And that can take some time before the inheritance is legalized by the court in your province.
So if you really trust your gay deed, make sure there is money to arrange everything including your burial or cremation when you die.

    Jan Beute.

At the Bangkok Bank you can open a joint account, where the passbook is in your name and the name of the Thai wife is not legible on one of the last pages of the passbook, which can only be seen with special light. That way it is not a problem for renewal of annual visa.

Moderator: Your comment should be about Thailand.

This is a very important topic and no one gives/has a watertight answer.

Our dear moderator and/or one of our members may have a Thai lawyer
in his/the circle of relations with a reassuring and watertight answer/solution!

I agree with Ruud. Who really can't get a reassuring and watertight answer, or should I consult the bank myself?

Does Erik Nong Khai, who I appreciate, have sound and watertight advice?

For me the simplest solution is: A booklet in your own name and a booklet in the name of your girlfriend (wife) to which you deposit a monthly amount, which, if she is wise enough; saves for later. And you keep control of the monthly expenses.

Then ask me what happens to the balance of your own account when you die. That's what the topic is about.

Have lived in Thailand for more than 10 years and no longer come to NL I have a joint account with my Thai wife at Rabobank. She also, like me, has a bank card. The Rabobank website states:

    What does Rabobank do?

The bank does not block a joint account (and/or account) after the death of one of the account holders.
