Dear readers,

We plan a tour to Thailand and start in Bangkok. We are a family of 5 people. A question about the temple visit and Khlong tours.

Are they easy to book locally? And also affordable? I get quotes through a travel agency such as 110.00 euros per person for a half-day temple visit, which seems quite expensive to me.

I would like to hear about your experiences.

110 euros pp, which is more than 4000 baht, for a half-day temple visit. Very expensive.
It goes without saying that if you book this through a travel agency that they also have to earn something from it.
You don't have to book anything in advance, just buy a ticket on the spot like most people do.

You can book and pay for everything on the spot in Thailand. Book your own hotels, etc. If you speak enough English, it's not all that difficult

The travel agency is located in the Netherlands and has Dutch (personnel) costs.
Moreover, they also have to pay for the trip in Thailand and would also like to earn some money.
It may not be too expensive, but a travel agency in the Netherlands simply cannot compete with a local provider.

Plan yourself what you want to see in Bangkok take a taxi meter and buy a ticket at the cash register you save a lot of money. For example, if you want to do the train market that is open again, travel to the station from where the train departs and the ticket is for sale at the cash register. Then you have lost roughly 500 baht for five people. If you take an excursion, it will cost about 1500 baht per person.

    Dear Philippe,
That is extremely expensive that they dare to ask that PER person.
For this price you can get a full day tour with the whole family.
There are plenty of small travel agencies everywhere, unless you are going to stay in a remote village, who are also happy to offer you all kinds of trips.
Watch out for the classic tourist traps such as viewing all kinds of companies with the intention that you will buy a lot of stuff there.
Of which the taxi or tuk driver will receive a nice commission.

If you have a Hotel in Bangkok, and a good tour magazine, you can undertake most of the sights on your own. The main temple, Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho, and the King's Palace are within walking distance of each other and can be easily reached by public transport. Even the price of a taxi is peanuts compared to a booked tour. If you look in a tour magazine from where the famous klong tours depart, just take a taximeter, which will drop you right at this place. When ordering the boat, you just have to be careful that you have the correct name of the Operator who offers this klong tour. It sometimes happens that you are approached by strangers who cheat with the ignorance of tourists. You will also find enough information on the Internet about places of interest, which you can download and print before your holiday, so that you really do not have to book tours for the city of Bangkok, which are much more expensive, and leave the same to see. For other tours that go far outside the city, such as the floating market or the river kwai, you can always look at the many Tour Operators, which you will find in many hotels or in the city.

Don't know which travel agency you go, but I think you will be taken!
Simply arrange in Thailand, can be done at any hotel, but there are also many booking shops!
    Have fun!

Take a look at the site of Greenwood, a Dutch travel agency in Bangkok

With 5 people they must have arranged a van which makes it so expensive. The disadvantage of this type of transport is that you often spend a lot of time in traffic jams. Perhaps a better idea to do most of your journey by BTS and a part by taxi. Costs significantly less and I think the entrance tickets are certainly not that expensive, but you didn't specify where you are going exactly, which makes it difficult to comment on this. Anyway, have fun in Bangkok.

Dear Philippe, if you want to visit one of the many temples (unguided), I would go there on your own. That doesn't have to cost much and is much more fun. For example, go to the most impressive, the Wat Arun, and take the 'regular' ferry across the river Chao Phraya. Dirt cheap. After visiting the temple, return to the ferry dock; there are several providers for a longtail boat trip through the klonghs. By the way, those men will come to you with an offer. But they prefer not to mention the price until you are already in the boat… So don't let the first boat talk you into it at an unclear price. First walk by some providers and then negotiate with one of them about the price (a boat exclusively for your family). Such a trip normally takes an hour. Have fun!

Dear Philippe, the best is to contact Teya from “Teya Thailand Tour Guide” (FB). She is very experienced, professional and affordable. We and many others had a very good and fun experience in Feb. You may use our name as a reference. Good luck and give her our regards.

For 110 Euro, which is about 4.000 bath, you can easily drive the entire 5-person family exclusively with a Van from attraction to attraction for a whole day, prepare at home what you want to see and you can explain it to the Van driver. Other options have already been mentioned above.
    Lots of fun.

Google is also your friend for planning trips. Find out where you want to go (it's already fun to do) and then look up the location on Google maps. See if you can get there via MRT, BTS or the canal taxi. Looks nice and a lot cheaper.
If you want to do a klong trip, haggle with one of the skippers, which is already a sport in itself in Thailand, and let yourself sail around with the five of you.

Have fun planning and enjoy your stay in Bangkok and Thailand.

    Dear Philippe,
You can arrange most temples yourself. Like the palace, just behind it you have Wat po. Keep the entrance ticket to the palace which gives you free entry to two other museums / attractions in the Dustin District.
What you can also do, for example, is watch some youtube video of Mark Wiens, he has made a special about 12 days in Bangkok, including the floating market with a boat trip there for 50 bath per person.

Here's a link to one of these youtube movies.

One of you 5 must have a smart phone. Purchase a Thai (net) sim card and go to the attractions where you want to go on your own. Google maps is your friend.
