Reader question: Who has experience with Waze navigation in Thailand?
Dear readers,
Does anyone have experience with Google's free GPS navigation app, Waze? I use it a lot in Europe, and will be going back to Thailand soon. I'd love to use it there too. Especially now that I read very mixed reactions here on the forum about TomTom.
And my previous experiences with Chinese GPS devices there - used by family - are not great either. As soon as I arrive I take a prepaid SIM with data for my smartphone.
Regards,
Khan Tom
In Thailand you can easily go with Google Maps. However, it cannot be used offline. In that case, download the 'Here' app from Google Play. This used to be from Nokia. After downloading via 'settings' 'get' the map of Thailand, and set it offline. All works wonderfully, for free and for nothing. Good luck.
Have Google Maps and “here drive” on my windows phone. Map of Thailand downloaded and works well. Also seen on Ipad from an acquaintance, Google Maps with good direction indication.
There were some shorter routes outside the official route but these were also quickly recognized.
These experiences gained in Krabi.
Used Waze for 4 weeks around New Year's Eve (area: Bangkok, Trang, Koh Lanta, Krabi). Worked great. http://Www.waze.com is a free navigation app for smartphones. And, I know from personal experience, Waze has significantly improved its map of Thailand recently.
I bought a local sim on Khao San Road (for so little money I can't be bothered to remember the amount). With this Sim I could go all month long (incl. Hot spot use for our group of 5 in places without good WiFi coverage)
Would you like to know more: I am Wazer Dutchdirt, reachable via the Waze forum.
I bought the (expensive) map from Tom Tom for Thailand 2 years ago for our GPS.
This one was downright dangerous. Sent us into non-existent roads or through roads that turned into a cart track and then a footpath…
I have sent a letter of complaint to Tom Tom but have only received a meaningless reply.
Google Maps maps are definitely better. My wife always had it open on the ipad to check our GPS directions…
I've been using Waze here for a long time.
It works very well especially in areas where there are many other users. The reports of traffic jams and checks are also very useful. The map is also good in somewhat busier areas. In less-visited areas, the map often leaves much to be desired, and Waze does not know the way.
The disadvantage is that you also have to be online for Waze.
Success!
Arjen.
On-line is better with Waze (files and notifications will then come through) but not necessary. For off-line use, simply load your route via WiFi in advance.
Here in Bueng Kan province, Waze hardly works, our village is not even on it at all … let alone the roads. This in contrast to “Here” which works perfectly and even knows our dirt road.
Hi Patrick,
Waze maps are continuously updated. Including by local editors, because they know the situation best. I can help you on your way to becoming an editor. Or you provide me with information that is not copyrighted and I can do it for you. Send me a PM, please.
Hi Peter
My email adress : [email protected]
I myself use the MAPS.ME app. No internet needed!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapswithme.maps.pro&hl=en
Only GPS on your phone or tablet is enough..
You can download the map in the app per country.
Have used it in 3 countries.
Great app.
You can see where you are.
Set where you want to go, and then calculate (and show) the route.
In a taxi you can then see where you are.
