Dear readers,

On April 22, 2014, my Thai wife and I will go with EVA Airways from Bangkok to Amsterdam and from there to Antwerp by shuttle bus. My wife has a visa C valid for 2 years, but of course always for 90 days.

We have been married for almost 2 years now, lived in Thailand during that period, but now want to move to Belgium permanently. We will therefore apply for family reunification at the municipality. The site of the Immigration Office states that this can happen and, if all documents have been submitted and there is still no response from the Immigration Department, the municipality will automatically extend the 90 days.

Question: I have therefore booked a one-way trip, can this cause a problem at the airport in BKK or in Amsterdam or do I still have to change this to a return flight?

Thanks and regards,

Bernard

    Dear Bernard,

It is best to ask for information at the Embassy of Belgium in Bangkok, you will also have received a visa from them.

or call the Immigration Office in Belgium

I thought you have to have a visa O for seeing reunion which is for married people
I am also married to a Thai and did not need a return visa.

or else ask the Immigration Service.

Remember a return plane ticket is cheaper than a one-way ticket.

Dear Bernard, I also went to live in Belgium with my wife in 2004 after being married in Bangkok and I did not need a return ticket for my wife, only a visa was sufficient and we have had no problems with that. Of course, we are now 10 years later and the rules may have changed, so go and inquire at the Belgian embassy in Bangkok. A single flight costs me less than a return ticket and you therefore have no problem getting a refund for the return ticket. After the civic integration obligation and after living in Belgium for a sufficient period of time (I think 3 years), your wife can apply for Belgian nationality. My wife obtained it through the “fast Belgian law” in force at the time, but without it she could just as well obtain Belgian nationality.
    Good luck together.
