Dear readers,

At the end of January 2018 we fly from Amsterdam to Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi Airport). Now we want to travel on the same day with Air Asia (or others) to Koh Samui.

How does this work regarding check-out – luggage – check-in again (where?). What is the minimum time required for this intermediate flight?

What are other important tips in this?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Jacks

    Have you already delved into it a bit? Then you should have seen that Air Asia does not fly to Koh Samui. Moreover, this airline departs from a different airport than the one where you arrive in Bangkok from Europe.
    Bangkok Airways is the best option. Whether you can already have your luggage labeled in Europe to your final destination depends, among other things, on the airline you are flying with.

    easy question, but difficult answer.

    A few tips/comments:
    – If both flights are not booked together, keep in mind that “the connection is not guaranteed”…;
    – Try to book a good/cheap flight from Europe that arrives in Bangkok early in the morning;
    – You have to queue twice in Bangkok after arrival: first at immigration (can sometimes take half an hour) and then at the baggage carousel (waiting time reduced at/due to a longer waiting time at immigration);
    – You must go through the entire check-in procedure (check-in, drop off luggage, scan hand luggage) again. There may be a longer wait at check-in here. The scan normally runs smoothly.

    My personal advice is as follows:
    – If the arrival in Suvaranabhumi is early in the morning (before 7am), make sure the “connecting” flight is after noon;
    – If the arrival is in the morning, make sure that the “connecting” flight is in the late afternoon or early evening;
    When you arrive in the late afternoon or evening, an overnight stay in Bangkok seems appropriate.

    Attention: Some flights depart from Suvarnabhumi. For other flights you have to go to Don Mueang.

    A margin of at least 4 hours seems safe to me. If your arriving flight is on time, you can easily withdraw money, eat something and/or buy a SIM card in Suvarnabhumi 😉

    It's a journey and not a daily commute!

    From your destination Bkk you can fly to koh samui with bangkok airlines. Return approximately $300. Lots of planes going that way. You can also fly with Thai Airways at certain times. Is more expensive. Look for more information http://www.kosamui.com. Click on info, there you will find all the info.

  4. Bob says up

    If you fly with KLM you can book directly to Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways via code sharing.
    If you fly with another company, you must count on 1 hour via the shuttle bus to Don Muang Airport. You also need to go through immigration, allow at least 1 hour.

    You make it a lot less complicated for yourself - but perhaps not cheaper - when you choose an airline that also operates from Suvarnabhumi for the connection. Air Asia and many of the budget airlines use the old airport Don Muang.

    How much time is needed depends on many factors, but you should calculate them in advance if you don't want to miss your connecting flight. Some of those factors disappear when you stay at the same airport.

    1. will your flight arrive on time?
    2. how much luggage do you have, and how long are the lines at Immigration?
    3. how much time is needed between the two airports - depends on time and mode of transport
    4. Count on 1,5 hours check-in time at the other airport, but also if you stay at Suvarnabhumi and have to check in there again if the chosen airlines are not part of a partnership and have not already given you a boarding card and have labeled your luggage, etc.

    Plan well, think carefully about which airlines and look carefully at the transfer time. The natural tendency is to take it too tight and with a half hour delay on arrival and an hour in line at Immigration you are suddenly stuck.

    Travel by domestic flight from Don Muang airport. So just go through immigration, pick up your suitcases and then take the bus or taxi to Don Muang. You can book with Eur Asia or Nok Aur via the Internet.

    • Cornelis says up

      What nonsense. Many domestic flights also depart from Suvarnabhumi. Bangkok Aiways and Thai Air are the only airlines that will take you directly to the island – and both fly from Suvarnabhumi. With your 'advice', the questioner will only get there with many detours and a lot of time wasted.

    Dear Jack,

    I did this in February. I flew with Eva Air. Landed in Bangkok about half past two. Then I flew with Bangkok Air at 18.00 pm directly to Koh Samui. This flight takes 55 minutes. It's just very pricey. Bangkok Air has the exclusive right to Koh Samui. This company charges around 5200 Bht. pp You can also fly from the other airport with NOK air, to Suratani. There in a van to the and then to Koh Samui. This is in a package that costs about 2300 bth. In addition, the transfer costs for transport to the old airport of Bangkok are added

    I'm going back in January and then fly direct from Bangkok to Koh Samui.

    As far as luggage is concerned, simply check out and then walk to the right for domestic flights.

    Greetings

    .

      The shuttle bus runs for free if you show your valid tickets or booking.

    Ask at Schiphol if they can browse your luggage to Koh Samui. We fly to Bangkok on January 18 with Eva Air and then 2 hours later to Bangkok Krabi. We can browse our luggage.

    Count quite some time. It can take quite a while at BKK Suvarnabumi (long queues at passport control). And then you have to go to Don Meuang Airport for Air Asia (all low cost airlines fly from there). There is a free shuttle to Don Meuang, takes an hour, departs every half hour. And your plane is usually lost half an hour later before you get off. I would put about 4 hours between your connecting flight.
    Or you have to fly with Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways or VietJet Air. All depart from Suvarnabumi. Really worth checking the prices.

    Only Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways fly to Ko Samui. The airport of Ko Samui is owned by Bangkok Airways

    Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways fly from Suvarnabhumi Airport. As far as I know, Ko Samui is an International Airport and your luggage could be labeled through. Depends again with which airline you fly from Amsterdam. But you can continue labeling with most airlines. Both with Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways. With "Smile", a subsidiary of Thai Airways, labeling is not possible.

    Dear Jack,

    AirAsia flies from the "old" airport of Bangkok. Since they are a low-cost carrier, you cannot have your luggage labeled from Schiphol to your further final destination. So you will have to do the entire procedure of Immigration and baggage collection on Suvarna and then transfer to the other airport. There you have to drop off your luggage and check in for your next flight. This process will take several hours.
    However, if you book a through flight from Suvarna with an airline that has a partnership with the airline with which you fly from Schiphol to Suvarna, you save yourself all that hassle. It is best to immediately book a through flight with your current ticket. Your luggage will then be labeled directly from Schiphol to your final destination. You will therefore stay in the Transit (Customs) section on Suvarna. Follow the Immigration signs with destinations such as Phuket/Koh Samui, etc. and your journey will run smoothly.

    Have a nice trip and vacation.

    If you want to fly directly to Koh Samui from Suvarnabhumi Airport or any other airport in Thailand, you can only fly with Bangkok Airways or Thai Airways. If they are separate tickets, you will have to go through customs and pick up the bags. I would personally allocate at least 3 hours for this.

    There are also other options available, only you fly to the mainland near Koh Samui and from there by ferry. This saves about 100 euros in terms of costs, but will cost you an extra half day. From Suvarnabhumi you can go with Thai Smile or from Don Mueang with Nok Air, Air Asia et ect. The drive from Suvurnabhumi to Don Mueang will take you at least an hour in the most favorable case.

    If you have not yet bought a ticket to Thailand, you may be able to use an interline. This saves picking up suitcases and going through customs. Anyway, have fun in Koh Samui.

    Air Asia and Nok Air depart from Don Muang. You have to go through immigration at Suvarnabumi airport, then collect your luggage and then go outside by taxi (meter) to Don Muang, allow about an hour and then check in for your domestic flight. you provide little information regarding your connections, departure time, etc. otherwise have a good trip.

      I usually fly with Lion Air to and from Don Muang Airport as it is usually the cheapest flight.

  14. Anita says up

    Dear Jack,
    Air Asia flies from Don Muang Airport.
    Only Bangkok Airways flies direct from Suvarnabhumi to Koh Samui.
    If you fly from Don Muang you first have to take a bus from Suvarnabhumi to Don Muang, this ride can take 1 hour but also 3 hours depending on traffic.
    You also have to take a bus from Surat Thani to the ferry that takes you to Koh Samui.
    I did this myself in August and found it no problem.
    What you have to pay attention to is that you catch the last ferry, otherwise you need an overnight stay in Surat Thani.

    Have a nice holiday in advance,

    Greetings Anita.

    hi, which is also easy and cheap (we will do this in Feb. 2018) with emirates via Dubai (an hour transfer) to bangkok and on to ko Samui. with the afternoon flight from amsterdam you will arrive at Ko Samui the next afternoon at approx. 3.30 pm!! take a look for the right time to book, but you still have plenty of time. we paid pp approx. 712.00 euros !!! booked with emirates itself !!!
    lots of travel fun.

      If you now take a look at bangkokair.com you will see that a return ticket to Samui from Bangkok currently costs 5000 baht (130 euros). You can book on the site with a credit card. Then you are free to book a flight to BKK yourself. or you can book all-in with KLM if that is not much more expensive (i.e. together with a connecting flight to Samui with Bangkok Air). The advantage is that your luggage can be relabeled to Samui, so you do not have to go through immigration in BKK and your connection time becomes shorter. Good luck!!

      • Renevan says up

        I live on Samui and have a Samui residency card from Bangkok airways. A discounted return ticket to Bangkok costs THB 4000 for me. Due to the cremation ceremony, there was an offer of a number of flights around October 26. Now you can book the cheapest return flight for less than 7655 THB and in January the cheapest return flight is 9435 THB. I don't know where you found a return flight for 5000 thb.

  16. Renevan says up

    Both Nok air and Thai Airasia sell combi tickets that include the flight (from the old airport), mini bus to the ferry (Donsak) and the ferry.
    Upon arrival in Bangkok through immigration and customs. There are free shuttle buses to Donmuang (from airport passenger terminal 2nd floor, gate 3 on the right side. Show the ticket here. Ride can take 50 minutes but also 2 hours. Shuttle bus can also leave in front of you, so wait At the next.
    This option is not recommended after a long flight, more something if you are already in Bangkok and have enough time.
    Book a ticket with Bangkok airways, then you can also use their free lounge (internet, snacks, and drinks) in Bangkok.
    When booking a ticket to Bangkok, ask the company whether the luggage can also be tagged. It is often the case that you can already check in for the connecting flight in Amsterdam. You then have two boarding passes and only go through immigration in Samui.
    Just for those who regularly fly with Bangkok airways, request a frequent flyer card. You save for free flights and you can also book their offers earlier. I automatically receive emails about the offers, next month for 1950 Thb from Chiangmai to Samui which otherwise costs 5950 thb.

    • Renevan says up

      Small addition, you will be referred to national transfer (domestic) in Bangkok and get passport control there. No long queues here. You get a sticker that you pick up that indicates that you still have to go through customs on Samui.

    We fly direct with Evaair arriving Bangkok 18/1 at 14.30:17.10 PM. At Schiphol, Eva is kind enough to, at our request, forward our luggage to Koh Samui so that upon arrival at Suvarnabumi we can walk directly to the Bangkokairways desk within the airport and not have to collect the luggage from the conveyor belt first - follow the signs above your head - Koh Samui is clearly indicated - on the way just before you reach the Bangkokairways desk you will pass immigration - you will get through this quickly - our flight will leave at XNUMX pm (if they are on time)
    last time we had an hour delay with Bangkokairways.

    Once you arrive on Koh Samui, you can collect your luggage from the belt (International). You can book tickets for both Eva and Bangkokairways directly online. have a nice holiday!

  18. Sjon van Regteren says up

    Dear Jack,

    Airasia starts from Don Muang and not from Suvarnambumi. There is a free shuttle between both airports that departs on the hour. Depending on the traffic, you can also travel for an hour by taxi. There are also times when customs are understaffed. Waiting times sometimes run up to several hours. So keep a wide margin between expected arrival from NL and departure to Samui.

    Good luck and have fun.

    • Cornelis says up

      Indeed, Air Asia departs from Don Muang – but does NOT fly to Koh Samui……………

  19. Wim says up

    It is best to book the entire trip at once, then your luggage will be called through and you can go from the international airport to the national airport, no problems. Call 333Travel or BM air. Good luck
