Reader question: Buses from Khon Kaen to Somdet
Dear readers,
Hi, we are going to Thailand in December. We then fly with an afternoon flight to Khon Kaen and arrive in Khon Kaen around 18.00 pm.
Now my question is whether anyone knows if I still get buses to Somdet in the evening, say to Kalasin, Sakonnakon, and what time do those buses leave and from where?
I've searched a lot on the internet but can't find a site that gives me answers to my questions.
eg
Frank
Frank,
I live in Khon Kaen and could check for you if you don't get an exact quote on this site. Let me know. To Somdet anyway.
[email protected]
If you know of a site or can provide information in another way, I would like to hear from you.
And yes, it is about the bus trip from Khon kaen to somdet in the evening hours.
Thanks in advance for your effort, Frank
Hello Frank,
I may have a solution for you.
Email me: [email protected]
Treech,
I think it makes sense that you set the solution on this website. Can others also benefit from it and I may not have to find out further things myself, if your information turns out to be sufficient.
regards Jacob
Dear Frank,
Years ago we flew to Khon Kaen in the evening and at the airport we booked a car with a driver to drive to Mahasarakham. That was really not that expensive back then (it was 20 years ago). I think the rental company was HERTZ and that is well known. You can also ask for a bus on site, but I think you first have to go to the bus station in the city and then hope that another bus runs possibly to Kalasin and then a bus from there to Somdet This bus is probably a bus to Sakhon Nakhon who drops you off en route in Somdet. If you really want to take the bus, I think that staying overnight in Khon Kaen (or possibly Kalasin) is worth considering.
Still, I wish you a nice trip.
Hello Frank ,
What is it like to sleep a night in Khon Kaen ,
and to continue your journey nice and fresh the next day .
Have a good trip and holiday.
MVG….Roland .
Frank,
There are 2 bus stations in the center of Khon Kaen. I was there this morning. From the regular bus stations, vans (minibuses) depart for Somdet every hour from 6.00 am to 18.00 pm. Cost 130 baht. There is also a regular bus, not a VIP and not so special, costs 95 baht. Ride 120km minibus 1,5 hours and bus 2,5 hours.
There is no bus connection in the evening, as far as I can tell.
The VIP bus station only has minibuses going that way.
Most buses then continue to Mukdahaan.
So you have to take a taxi from the airport.
regards Jacob
Email me if I can assist you
First thanks for the info. Because I only arrive in khon kaen around 6 o'clock I think I'll book a cheap hotel close to the bus station and then leave early in the morning for somdet. If you know of another cheap hotel near the bus station, hear that love you. Also, do you maybe know the address of the bus station so that I can search for a hotel nearby on the internet.
Thanks again for the effort.
Frank
Frank,
This morning I went to the new 3rd bus station, on the south ring road 230, of Khon Kaen. My daughter's school is not far from there. Saw that there is a bus to Somdet 2x in the early morning. That's a VIP bus. The 829 bus runs from Mae Sot to Mukdahaan. So from west , the border with Burma , to east the border with Laos. Depart Khon Kaen according to the signs there 2.30 and 4.30 am.
Later I found this site that more or less confirms that.
http://www.phetprasert.com/index2.php?name=timetable&file=r829-2
The regular bus station is on road 12 from airport to Khon Kaen on the left after you cross highway 2 , in the heart of Khon Kaen . Distance 7km. Same distance as to 5rd bus station.
For hotels it is better to email me. [email protected] otherwise it will be chatting on this site and I don't think that's allowed. It will also take a while for you to arrive.
regards, no thanks due, Jacob
Kalasin itself is not far, think an hour with a car? Not sure how far Somdet is, but you could also consider taking a taxi to Kalasin / Somdet.
In terms of costs, this could be just as expensive or cheaper than a taxi from the airport to the city center, hotel, taxi in the morning and then a bus.
The route from the airport to the bus terminal is on Maliwan Road, 18:00 PM is peak time in Khon Kaen and it could also be a long ride with a taxi. If you are going from the airport to Kalasin, the fastest route is out of the city and over the ring road 230 and then onto the highway 2.
