Much to the chagrin of expats and tourists, Thai banks once believed they should charge fees for cash withdrawals via ATMs.

150 baht fee for cash withdrawal

This way you pay for every cash withdrawal Thailand, 150 baht. Many people therefore choose to pay the maximum amount at once the pinna. Because if you regularly withdraw small amounts at an ATM, the costs quickly add up.

Guido sent me an article from Columbusmagazine, where a good one type in a state that I don't want to keep from you.

There are three locations in Bangkok where you can still withdraw 'free':

  • MBK Mall – second floor
  • Siam Center – second floor
  • Siam Paragon – ground floor

The writer of the article went to look and discovered at least one of the three ATM. The ATM in the MBK Mall.

How do you recognize the ATM?

They are gray ATMs from a bank in Singapore, the name is not big on it so watch the screen. You need to search the screen for the name Aeon or ACS. The amount you withdraw will not be increased by 150 THB, this has been verified by the writer.
It is also the case that Thai banks warn you in advance that an extra amount will be charged when withdrawing money via an ATM. That is because it is mandatory. You can always cancel a transaction if you still have to pay.

You can find the relevant ATM on the second floor of the MBK Shopping Center. Go to "zone C" and look for the exit that leads to the parking garages. There are two machines, the left one is the good ATM. Next to it is a yellow one that is not free. NB! They are mobile machines so don't be put off if it's not there. But it's been there for almost a year now, so it should go well.

Thanks to Guido and the author of the article for the tip.

Is the exchange rate of the Aeon the same as that of the Thai banks?
Your own Dutch bank also charges money for debit card payments abroad , in my case ING .
But I have a so-called royal package and earn back the costs by being able to withdraw money abroad for free, regardless of the amount.
I do take cash with me, and take the risk of losing it …………

I can spare that 3 euros, but it is the annoyance of yet another Thai region. And forcing yourself to withdraw larger amounts makes you a potential victim again. However you do it, it ALWAYS costs money. Transferring from the Netherlands to Thai also costs money.

I just think… a lot of things are cheap.

Apparently one of the ATMs mentioned could be found. It is also located in the heart of Bangkok. What does it not cost to get there? Transferring large amounts is a lot cheaper. At ABN it is 5,50 euros per transaction. a Thai account is easy to open at Kasikorn Bank.

you can also often find these ATMs at the BIG C

If you visit Thailand regularly, try opening a Thai bank account. Transfers from the Netherlands are indeed 5,50 or 5,70 abn amro for private individuals, but beware if you do it from a Dutch business account you pay your black and blue. Almost 30 euros for every small transfer.
Please note that with the normal Thai bank card you can often only withdraw from ATMs of that bank (such as Bangkok Bank) even if there are still so many logos on it.
Withdrawing with credit cards such as American Express is completely a crime. It doesn't work in many vending machines in the country. And you pay in any case the 150 bath, plus in NL the usual 3 or 4% and often shortly afterwards an extra amount of a few euros for "deferred bank costs" no idea what this is (at ING and AbnAmro)
Rate is usually cheapest with the old giro now ING

At least these are my experiences. I am always interested in money saving tips.

Another very unique experience that I have had for years now and has also been confirmed verbally by the various banks upon inquiry. During the last and first days of the month it is often impossible to withdraw money with a foreign credit card at ATMs in the villages in Isaan.
Why ? very simple, the atms are not sufficiently supplied and then set for a few days so that only thai customers can withdraw money.
Now I know but in the beginning a nasty surprise. This in addition to the fact that you cannot pay with a credit card in almost any shop in Isaan. Cash only.
In many villages you do not yet have an ATM and you sometimes have to drive kms to the next larger village / city to be able to withdraw money.

That dragging away is a nice story. Someone has found a new source of income it seems.

Pinning with a Maestrode debit card is no longer possible from January 2011 outside Europe!
The easiest way to avoid extra costs when using a debit card is to change money with your credit card and passport at a money exchange office and that costs nothing!

That only applies to Belgian account holders, I forgot to add. In my case they want to reactivate the card for a month (Argenta) and at Dexia it could be permanent, according to a friend of mine! But I bring enough cash; that's the most convenient and put it in a safety deposit box at Bangkok Bank and partially into my account at that bank. So I don't change everything at once to keep an eye on the exchange rate.
Such a safe costs more than 1000B. per year, but often none are available.

In response to various posts here, I also opened an account with the Kasikorn bank in Thailand last time. The bank in MBK said it was not possible (no need work permit) but at another Kasikorn branch it was no problem (you do need a Thai address).

It is also in the question, if you say I want to open an account, you will quickly get a no as an answer. However, if you say I have x thousand baht I want to deposit but I don't have an account then it won't be much of a problem.

You will receive the bank card immediately and you can activate internet banking in the ATM. Internet banking works very well at Kasikorn, for example, you can also top up your call credit for every change, you will receive a text message with a code.

    • Good tips ThailandPattaya, I'll try it next time.

Kasikorn Bank in Lat Phrao, no work permit, within 10 minutes, savings bank book with accompanying Visa card, no problem

nonsense there are more than 100 in BKK from Aeon Bank, just go to Google and type Aeon ATM in BKK, in the meantime I have found even more, also several that are not yet on the internet and in Khon Kaen, Central Mall there are several and in other places too and it seems that withdrawing money from the Citi bank in BKK is also free of charge

    • erik says up

there are indeed a lot that are not yet on the Internet, here in Lat Phrao I have already discovered 10

I also wanted to open an account in Thailand, and the same story everywhere, need working permission, now I'm not going to Thailand to work.

now I have heard that it is possible to open a save account, so a savings account, and then you could also withdraw money from it with a bank card.

Has anyone ever tried to apply for this?

    • ferdinand says up

Kasikornbank and Bangkok bank simply give an account / saving account with bank / debit card as long as you say that you want to deposit money first.
You don't get credit. That first after a while and with a fixed Thai address.

Opened an account with the scb bank and bangkok bank with internet banking with my thai girlfriend without any problems, one in both names and one in my name do not have an annual visa work permit, only at the bangkok bank that guy wanted an email address from hotmail for internet banking without question . otherwise the codes could not be emailed he said ????

Both times I was right when opening the account that I immediately wanted to deposit 20.000 thb and have a Thai address. Bangkok bank still asked for income data and work, did not have to submit anything in writing.

My parents-in-law have been given a pass on which they can withdraw 4000 thb monthly, you can set.
Ing has the advantage that you can work with a code list, if you lose your bank card you can always transfer money from the Netherlands to your Thai account.

My bangkok bank also works with western union, so cash quickly if necessary
