At the company doctor…. (reader submission)

A few years ago, when I was still working for a large steel company in IJmuiden, I had to report to the occupational health and safety service for yet another medical check-up. Every few years there is a physical examination for people who work in heavy industry, for example at a blast furnace or a steel factory.

So cheerfully to the examination, where a more than beautiful assistant of the doctor took a few tests, such as hearing, eyes, lungs and my blood pressure. The blood pressure was a bit on the high side, but what do you want with an assistant like that.

Then on to the room of the doctor who I did not know yet and who, according to what he said, came from a country in Africa but spoke excellent Dutch. I went through the questionnaire and the results of the assistant and he had seen in the questionnaire that I had a slight increase in blood sugar. He asked “if you pee on the roadside, will ants run towards it” my answer was “no”. The doctor said: "Okay, then your sugar is not too bad".

Then in sports shorts on the "test bike" and cycling, boy that is still quite heavy.

The doctor asked me what the gold chain with accompanying pendant with a Buddha was that I was wearing. I told him that I was married to a woman from Thailand. “Is that really true asked the doctor?” I say yes". He says, with a big smile on his face, “Get off that bike because I don't have to test that if you're married to a Thai woman”.

A wonderful guy with a nice sense of humour.

    Hello everyone,
Then I can also tell you something, I got married in Sri Lanka and come to the Netherlands for a while every year.
In the hospital, Weert, I had an extensive, (independent) hearing test done. Because I want to know MYSELF.

Dokter de W… was friendly and funny too. Spoke with a South African accent
He said, obviously, so you have a new wife, from Sri Lanka…..

After that, don't talk too loud, because the ladies around here are also listening.
I said, we understand each other.

I often had to do that test I worked as a welder in the boiler industry where many workpieces were preheated from 150 to 350 degrees C. but that cycling what a change after every 60 seconds the brake was tightened until you almost fell off but always passed the test.

When I had to take a mandatory test at my 75th birthday to renew my driver's license, the doctor was impressed by my vision with and without glasses, he claimed I had an eagle's eye. Almost everything was still in excellent condition except that he had found "a trace of glucose" in the mandatory urine sample. After answering a number of A4 pages of questions, he forwarded the results (electronically) to the CBR. I was not done with that yet, a 2nd test had to be taken and a visit to the doctor who explained the consequences of type 2 diabetes to me in detail and therefore convinced me to avoid carbohydrate-rich food as much as possible. So especially bread, potatoes, rice and pasta had to be avoided, just the things I like. So get started with baking your own bread from nut flour, coconut flour and almond flour. Not really edible, but yes, doctor's orders ... in addition to the diet, the doctor advised starting the day with a glass of water followed by a brisk morning walk, after which around 12 o'clock a cracker with cheese or salad with oily fish was allowed. The evening meal should consist of lots of vegetables and some meat or fish. That did result in a weight loss of about 7 kilos after a few months, which was visible through a considerably less bulging abdomen. But after about 7 months I was fed up with that diet and then regularly indulged in a satay with peanut sauce, fried potatoes and nasi goreng. Strangely enough, since then I have more or less stayed at the weight recommended by the doctor, so the discovery of that “trace of glucose” also had positive sides and I still walk around almost every day. After the 2nd test I got my extended driver's license after all, so I can drive around again until I'm 80.
