You experience everything in Thailand (66)
About a week ago, Johnny BG wrote a nice story about the Tam Nak Thai restaurant and wondered if this restaurant has been forgotten or if there are people who still remember that restaurant.
Christaan, whom you have met twice before in episodes of “You experience all sorts of things in Thailand” responded to this. He is very familiar with the restaurant, the largest with roller skate service, and sent us the following reminder.
Tam Nak Thai in Huay Kwang, Bangkok
In 1979 we bought our first house in Thailand, it was in a suburb of Bangkok namely Huay Kwang, actually not that far from Sukhumvit Road and Pratunam.
At that time it was still a swampy area with many snakes, but it would certainly become a good investment due to the construction of the highway Ratchada Pisek, which was not yet completely finished between Din Deng and Huay Kwang.
Our cottage was in a moo lane, but without security and walls around it, 200 square meters, one floor, three bedrooms two bathrooms with a separate bedroom and bathroom for any servant and all that including land cost 350.000 baht then, one for now incredible price
There were some problems, on our first day in our house, there were two large cobras in front of our door. Also at that time a lot of flooding in Bangkok, also with us. Once had smelly water around our house for three months. Transport to the center was then arranged with military trucks.
The Rachada Pisek highway was finished and huge constructions were made, such as the Siam Jusco department store with the famous Tam Nak Thai restaurant next to it, it was called the largest restaurant in Asia or in the world. The specialty was therefore the service on roller skates, the restaurant was largely built above water, through the wooden corridors the service in traditional Thai clothing flew on roller skates with the trays of food to the tables. Of course things sometimes went wrong, we have also seen many bowls of delicious Thai food flying through the air. We liked to come there with guests and customers, it was tasty and special.
We sold the house two years later for 1,2 million baht, so it was indeed a good investment.
Does the roller skate restaurant still exist?
Hello Rob,
The original restaurant no longer exists, there is a new location and a new name; “Golden Dragon”.

With an S after Christiaan we arrive at Christiaans, my real last name.
Very nice to read this story again, and to be amazed at how much Bangkok has changed, especially between 1980 and 1990, it is unbelievable what changed, now living in Cha-am I still think about that regularly when I occasionally If you go to Bangkok again, it will still feel like coming home again
