You experience everything in Thailand (25)
Another episode in our series from a blog reader who experienced something fun in Thailand. Do you also have an experience with something special, funny, curious, moving, strange or ordinary about Thailand, let us know via the contact form..
Of course it does not necessarily have to have taken place in Thailand, those nice experiences with Thailand also occur in the Netherlands and Belgium. It can be long or short, but just fun to tell. Perfect Dutch is allowed, but not required, the editors will help you to make a nice story out of it.
Today a story from blog reader Adri about his English lessons to Thai children, good for a smile.
This is the story of Adri
English lesson
When I am in Thailand I volunteer at a primary school. I teach English to all groups. This time the group teacher of group 3 (in Thailand still class 1) had asked me to give a lesson about the days of the week.
Well prepared at home the day before. Started the lesson with good courage in class. Of course I had memorized the Thai names of the days myself. After more than half an hour of explaining, writing down, giving turns, both individually and in class, I wanted to know if it all had taken root. I wiped the board and picked up 7 nicely colored cards with the names of the days in both English and Thai. I covered the Thai name, said the English name, and the kids had to tell me the Thai name.
Flawless!! Super. I showered the kids with compliments! I looked at the teacher and she smiled a little smugly. Anyway, the lesson was over and I asked her why that smile. Her answer was that the days in Thailand all have their own color. So the children could see which day it was by the color of the card!!
Of course I repeated this test with black and white cards I made myself. And luckily they almost all did it flawlessly!
AWESOME!
Learned something new after more than 35 years of traveling to Thailand… I really didn't know that every day there had a different color. I don't have the slightest problem with the names of the days in Thai but the months!!!! I can only remember the first 5/6 of those! Really too hard…
I happened to end up in a school in Ubon Ratchatani once. i studied Plastic Arts Graphics in my younger years (seventies) and during this incident my Thai was still very limited. I was able to explain my art education with many gestures and then suddenly a brand new mini compressor with mini spray gun for special paint was brought out and I had to give a demonstration with it haha. Looks like it has never been used. I did the first basic sketches in pencil from a volunteer and heard a contemptuous buzz in the background but that noise died down as I started spraying the depth and relief! I actually got more awe and respect until….. the electricity went out and I had to pack my bags before I could finish the portrait haha.
Who can tell me which color belongs to which day? Your answer makes me feel like I'm in group 3 (1st grade) again……thanks in advance!
