He was the favorite dog of the Thai king, but Tongdaeng died of old age on Saturday at the summer palace in Hua Hin.

The Thai court has confirmed this in an official statement. The bitch was seventeen years old.

The death of the dog is big news in Thailand. Tongdaeng (Thong Daeng means copper colored) was once a street dog. The king lovingly took care of the beast in 2002 and took Tongdaeng under his wing. In the same year, King Bhumibol even wrote a book about his beloved four-legged friend. In it he describes her as a "respectful dog with neat manners".

The king has often been photographed and filmed together with Tongdaeng over the past seventeen years.
