Vegetables are widely available in Thailand, relatively cheap and you cannot eat too much of them. They contain almost no calories and are super healthy. Vegetables provide important nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals and dietary fiber. Expats who want to live longer and keep disease at bay should eat at least two ounces of vegetables or more a day, as a diet high in vegetables can extend your lifespan and reduce your risk of cancer.

Nutrition scientists at Sookmyung Women's University in South Korea discovered this after following a group of more than 15 men for XNUMX years. However, a diet high in fruit had no effect in the Korean study.

When the study began in 1993, study participants were aged 40-59. The researchers knew the diet of the men, kept track of which men died and why.

Results

The more vegetables the men ate, the less likely they were to die during the study. Men who currently eat few vegetables would also do well if they ensure that they still consume two ounces of vegetables every day. The consumption of vegetables reduced the risk of cancer, the Koreans discovered. A high intake of vegetables also reduced the chance of dying from cancer. The consumption of fruit, on the other hand, did not reduce the risk of getting cancer.

Green health

Vegetables can therefore not only mean a nutritious meal, but also a medicine. Hippocrates, the founder of Medicine, said: ¨Food is the best medicine and the best medicine is food.¨ By eating healthy you arm your body against viral and bacterial invaders. Healthy food is the best preventive against unhealthy external influences. Vegetables contain a lot of fiber. As a result, nutrients are absorbed more effectively and more evenly by the body. As is well known, fiber is not the only good thing in vegetables. Vitamins and minerals can provide important antioxidants. Antioxidants destroy free radicals in our body. In addition, there are also phytonutrients that sometimes have an even stronger antioxidant effect. In addition, phytonutrients can enhance the effect of each other and that of vitamins and minerals. There are several dozen vitamins and minerals and many thousands of phytonutrients or phytochemicals, as they are also called. These phytochemicals are sometimes found in dozens in one vegetable.

Conclusion

In the last paragraphs of their publication, the researchers point to the possibility that their study underestimates the positive effects of a high intake of vegetables. This could be because people who eat a lot of vegetables every day have unknown characteristics that increase their risk of dying. For example, they may be ill, and therefore follow a special diet.

Most people know that eating vegetables is healthy. The fact that it has now also been scientifically proven that it can reduce your risk of dying is one more reason not to push away the lettuce leaves on your plate of meat. However, it is important to see if you can find organically grown vegetables in Thailand because Thai people use quite a lot of pesticides. An alternative is to grow your own vegetables and that is also a nice hobby.

Healthy vegetables are indeed the keyword. Not only are most Thai vegetables full of pesticides, formaldehyde baths are also sometimes used to "pep up" vegetables and make them shine nicely. Be warned!

Is eating vegetables in Thailand really that healthy?
I can remember an earlier article (January 16, 2012) about vegetables that it is not that healthy at all. See; http://www.thailandblog.nl/nieuws-uit-thailand/veel-gewasbeschermingsmiddelen-aziatische-groenten/
There are shops that sell unsprayed vegetables, but a lot more expensive.
    Enjoy your meal

Might all be true, but what if you don't like vegetables? I abhor vegetables and in a restaurant I eat everything on the plate, but the green food remains neatly behind on the plate. If I manufacture something for myself, there is certainly no piece of vegetable involved. Same with fruit, the only fruit I can appreciate is a banana or a pear now and then, on average 2 or 3 times a month, for the rest…..Never mind, not spent on me.

    • Khan Peter says up

Dear Rob, make a vegetable / fruit smoothie daily. Make sure it is cold. A delicious thirst quencher and super healthy.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely consider it and perhaps start with fruit... Later maybe some recipes with vegetables in them.

It is mainly about the chlorophyll that is present in green vegetables.
Chlorophyll powder and drinks are available in Thailand and you can buy Chlorella and Spirulina powder/tablets in the rest of the world. This increases your resistance and supports the functioning of organs.

I have to agree with the comment about the increase in pesticides and air pollution that you have to ask yourself whether vegetables are still that healthy.

Chlorella and Spirulina are green algae that double in 2 hours with plenty of sunlight, pure water and CO8.
thus a very fast-growing food source.

    • Khan Peter says up

This not only concerns green leafy vegetables, but also cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, green cabbage and red cabbage. But you should also regularly put sausages, tomatoes and legumes on the menu. Allium vegetables such as onions, garlic, chives, shallots and leeks are also super healthy. A sweet potato is definitely recommended, it contains a lot of carotenoids, vitamins C, B, A and K, potassium, iron and fiber. Don't forget peppers, they contain a lot of potassium, manganese, vitamins A, B, C and K.
Fresh vegetables are always preferable to artificial vitamin pills, the effect of which is also dubious. Pills contain either synthetic vitamins or abstracted natural vitamins and are never healthier than fresh vegetables or fresh fruit, because the vitamins and minerals in vegetables are better absorbed by the body.

      • Ruud says up

        Dear Peter,

First take a closer look at the algae species mentioned, which are purely natural, and not even a substance has been added to make pills out of them.

I know them but there is no scientific basis for the health claims:
Many beneficial powers are therefore attributed to the 'superfoods' chlorella and spirulina. However, there are no approved health claims from the European Food Safety Organization EFSA for this. There is no sufficient scientific basis for any of these health-promoting properties.

vegetables on the local markets contain a lot of formaldehyde.. has even been admitted by the Thai government. Because how can it be that after 2 days the weakest vegetables are still beautiful in the heat of Thailand .. and many organic vegetables are sold, but I doubt whether it is really organic.

That fruit does not protect against cancer is, of course, a legend.
At the time, Moerman cured cancer patients with a lot of vitamin C obtained from oranges, supplemented with many vitamins such as A, D and E, plus a targeted diet.

March 11, 2015 … Fruit does protect against cancer, especially against tumors in the mouth, … Indirectly, eating a lot of fruit (and vegetables) can also increase the risk …

Making a smoothie with strawberries, banana, oranges and kiwis every day is super healthy.
    And be moderate with meat.

Well, I read the article and it only reinforces the idea that fruit does something, but not much:
What is true is that fruit does less against cancer than we used to think. Initially, the idea was that the antioxidants in fruit would protect against all types of cancer, but the evidence for this is less strong. Perhaps it is other substances in fruit, so-called phytochemicals, that reduce the risk of cancer.

The research on vegetables is not only about preventing cancer, but about staying healthy for longer and therefore living longer. In that respect, vegetables clearly do more than fruit.

As long as it contains vitamins, it is healthy. As long as it contains anti-oxidants, it is healthy. Both true, but only relatively true. Too much of a good thing is not good. You won't eat too much of vegetables alone. Eat more vegetables than fruit.

  8. John Chiang Rai says up

It is certainly a fact that eating lots of vegetables and fruit is healthy, as long as not too much is sprayed.
Only apart from my own garden, or a well-known grower, I am very skeptical about not spraying. If you know how the existing legislation in Thailand is controlled, and every vegetable trader wants to sell, extreme caution is advised.
Many farmers in Thailand first think of the (Profit), and have no thought of using any means for this.

I eat a lot of vegetables, but I regularly have big questions about wanting to grow that old. One day you will be 90 plus. Equipped with many plastic parts. You're as slow as a snail and when things go against you, it doesn't go well in your head. You need help with everything and you may be wearing diapers. That image comes to my mind in the many discussions about getting old. Anyone who does visit a nursing home is always shocked by the ape acid. Children born today can live to be 125 years old. Then I think thank you for that. But I don't stop eating vegetables because I'm used to grazing a lot of vegetables.

For years I have been growing vegetables here in Thailand, especially leafy vegetables such as lettuce, endive, bok choy, Chinese cabbage and of course also garden herbs such as parsley and celery. And if I buy vegetables at the market, I buy from older people who grow vegetables themselves; that there are sometimes traces of insects that ate them, then you can assume that no pesticides have been sprayed.

  11. Hugo Cosyns says up

The farmers who switch do not think first of profit, but of the health of themselves and their customers.
Organic farming (in Thailand it is called Organic farming) is still quite new here and few farmers start with this, for various reasons.
Myself and my Thai wife have visited about 3 farms in Thailand in 30 years, just in Isaan, hardworking farmers and the main idea is not to use chemicals and to market a product that you can be proud of.
If you want to be sure that you buy organic vegetables, you should look for the label ORGANIC THAILAND.
It takes 3 years before you can have this label, during these 3 long years you can sell your products under the supervision of the organization ORGANIC THAILAND and supervision means that every time you put a product on the market and you want to sell it Organic, you have to give them You will also notify two people who will visit your farm, samples will be taken from the soil and after inspection you can start selling your product.
These organic farmers try to pass on their knowledge of organic farming for FREE to anyone who is interested in starting with it, anyone can visit these farmers whenever you want.
There is no need to make an appointment and you can walk around just about anywhere you want, I have never been stopped on the contrary.
There are farmers who try without Chemistry and without knowledge and fail in a good harvest and then start using Chemistry again, there are many, to great regret.
There is also a kind of middle ground for farmers who find the transition in one go too big and you will find the vegetables under GAP. I do not know the total system, but the bottom line is that 1 weeks before the harvest chemistry can be found.

There are millions of people who are deficient in magnesium in their bodies all over the world,
couldn't it be that we weren't eating and eating enough good vegetables?

Isn't it true that because of all the chemicals used in the vegetable industry, the nutritional value is very low or perhaps nil?

Who is going to tell us the professors who work for the same vegetable industry?

In addition to a small vegetable garden, we have been working on banana trees for a while now
to plant – already have around 200 and all we use is water!
We exchange fruit and vegetables with neighbors for eg rice and eggs and….
The only guarantee of healthy food is when you see it grow yourself.

In the Netherlands I eat vegetarian and organic as much as possible (95%?).
When I'm in Thailand I always have to cross a threshold.
The food is very tasty, but I don't know what kind of junk is in it.
I just hope for the best.

And I have a lot of admiration for the organic farmers and the industry in Thailand and the surrounding area.
In Vietnam (Hoi An) I visited an organic garden 2 years ago. Impressive!
A lot of manual work, but that will not be much different in the non-organic gardens.

      On the other hand,
      - The wise of the country, the honor of the country.
-When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
-NOT: what a farmer does not know……….

I then eat ants and other insects as a snack and point out things in the street stalls that I don't know where they are in a pig.

But if I see a vegetarian/organic restaurant somewhere, I always go there as first choice.

      Bon appetit and good health,

Not liking vegetables is a pity, it is certainly healthy, make a nice bowl of lettuce as the Italians are used to, mixed lettuce, some red cabbage, tomato, cucumber, olive, pickle, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, some salad oil, dressing with garlic, eat before or during a meal, delicious, easy to eat, even if you have little appetite in hot Thailand, can also be adjusted to your own taste, highly recommended.
Fruit, buy a powerful blender, grab a pineapple or apples, squeeze the juice from the remains through a cloth, cool the juice, delicious. You can use the remainder in the cloth to make jam, don't use sugar but honey, read somewhere, don't have the source unfortunately, the stem of the pineapple contains important substances that fight cancer.
    Eat and drink tasty.

    Dear Hugo,
There are certainly farmers who have started with so-called "Organic farming", but if you also wrote this, it is still in its infancy.
As long as the majority of farmers see only quantity as a priority, the consumer must still have a great deal of confidence and hope that the trader is telling the truth.
Even in Europe where the controls are much better and stricter, the Label "BIO" is still subject to scams, so I am also very careful with the Thai Label "ORGANIC THAILAND".
Years ago when shrimp farming was getting good prices, many farmers had dollar signs in their eyes. Because these shrimps swam in their own excrement, kilos of chemistry were used to prevent diseases to maximize profit. Now that the massive farming of these shrimps has caused prices to plummet, many growers have shut down, with the result that their lands are drenched in poison and chemistry, so that nothing can be grown here for years.
Now this shrimp breeding is actually Off-Topic, but usually comparable to many vegetable growers, who also do everything to get as much profit as possible, and certainly do not think of the consumer in the first instance. That's why TRUST IS GOOD, BUT CONTROL IS BETTER…

I think it increases the risk of cancer.
The story is true in itself, eating vegetables is healthy.
But since I also live in the Thai countryside .
And every day around me see what pesticides are used here.
Not only for the vegetables , but also for the fruit trees .
My wife washes the vegetables many times before use, she even says eating daily in a restaurant increases the risk of cancer.
Since not much attention is paid to this, cleaning the food before use.
The farmers here set off before dawn with their moped with trailer or sidecar.
Complete with motor spray installation pump and blue 100 liter water tank.
And just spray morning and evening.
Next to my plot on one side is also a logan orchard, when the owner is spraying I'm gone for a while.
The stench and the mist alone can make you dizzy.
Last year they found him unconscious on another logan plot of his.
But I have to be honest , he has the most beautiful and biggest logans during the harvest .
And his trees look fantastic despite all the spraying, but what do you want all the insects and caterpillars are now RIP.
And therefore also receives the bonus when selling.
    Good Appetit.
Just look around you in Thailand , what is not sold to spray installations .
    And pesticides.
About 9 years ago I even came across the letters DDT.
Cancer is not only the number 1 or 2 cause of death in Thailand .
My spouse's brother earns his living with spraying almost daily.
Makes good money in a day , about 700 bath per lot .
He has the pump the customer pays for the liquid.
Is now seriously ill presumably thinks my ega CANCER.

Hi all, totally agree with the above publications, but I do have a few suggestions related to EATING VEGETABLES.

For example, in the previous episodes I was not able to rave about MY FRIEND HAS DIABETES 2, so now I can inform you that in this context of “EAT MORE VEGETABLES” you can go to the site of: optmalegezondheid.com by Jack Boekhorst, about the diabetes control method, for 45 Euro I am the boss of my own diabetes 2. The core: No sugars, not too many carbohydrates, slow carbohydrates (vegetables).
In my case, in 10 weeks, from blood sugar level 172 mg/dl (almost fatal)(9.55 ml/mol = :18) to 95 mg/dl (5,27 ml/mol), so outside the danger zone! Now let's be honest again, a few more beers per week, 1 max 2 per day, my average is 115, but this can still be done without medication, because that's what it was all about, “without medication”, because they only stop the symptoms don't heal. Jack Boekhorst's method actually gives the pancreas the opportunity to recover and not be bombarded with sugar (carbohydrate) attacks dozens of times a day, and forced to produce more insulin again.
Also searched in the context of "without medicine" on the internet for the side effects of my medicines against too high CHOLESTEROL, CRESTOR and EZETHROL, (5000 bath per month!) Result: stopped abruptly, My "too high" cholesterol level now causes that new building materials for my brain cells are transported from the liver and to all other body parts instead of the liver cells being destroyed and no longer able to produce cholesterol. So the free extra delivery of Alzheimer's and Parkingson is canceled for me! Alzheimer's! where am I here?) can therefore eat 5 eggs a day with confidence! For example, go to "side effects CRESTOR", but don't be shocked that you are now a diabetic (one of 250) because you use crestor!!!

Now also the opportunity to discuss ATRHOSE afterwards, see previous publication thaiblog, again very good reactions, but I have not heard anyone talk about the use of a nutritional supplement called Finito Forte Plus, this is probably a Dutch product. Even a serious patient with osteoarthritis in the knee joints, due to overuse during my 40 years of work history as a sports teacher, I thought that everything was possible, but unfortunately I forgot about the wear and tear process. I am now happy with Finitro Forte, which can be ordered worldwide via the Internet.
PROPERTIES: promotes the production of glucosamine and chondroitin, production of cartilage cells, promotes the production of joint lubricants, relieves pain through natural painkillers, inhibits the inflammatory process. WHAT COULD THIS MEAN FOR YOU. Very simple! All the approximately 350 joints in your body are rejuvenated, new cartilage cells, lubricated, inflammation inhibited. My personal experience: after a week you feel as if you are 18 again! Climbing stairs without pain! Feel like moving again!
Unfortunately, after 40 years of heavy service, I had to undergo knee surgery, Finitro can no longer help if irreparable damage has occurred, such as tearing or no longer present of the cartilage. In this case, Finiro only helps as a pain reliever.
A cure costs an average of 29 Euro per month, but after a few months you can switch to 1/2 use. I myself now use even less (1/4) because I regularly make smoothies from Annanas, so that I experience that this has the same effect (.Finitro will probably not be happy with this statement!) For information go to http://www.finitro.com

This apparently boring story may be a relief for many expats who suffer from DIABETES 2
    HIGH CHOLESTEROL
    ARTHROSIS, or

who hang too much at the bar,
    don't want to move
or can't muster up the energy for a little loving sex

In addition, resources are used to make the vegetables look fresh and 'beautiful'.
This is now also done with meat and fish (a kind of oil).
One of the means used is to preserve corpses. They prefer to poison the consumer
than to throw away limp vegetables due to the heat influence. Cooling costs money….. and everything is based here
to enrich themselves as quickly as possible.
Healthy eating in Thailand, a joke.

    Dear e, hm,

You really don't have to be mad at Thailand,
indeed the food here is not always healthy, apart from the use of chemistry in growing fruit and vegetables, there is also the sugars and other seasonings that are used and then the preservatives.

But isn't it true that in the Netherlands and Belgium there are major problems with too much sugar and chemistry in the diet?
Isn't it true that the ordinary non-organic food industry has little or no control over the floor and something is only taken off the shelves if it has already been sold.
With us in Belgium, the vegetables and meat products are also all shining, do you really think they have not been tampered with?

There is indeed little or no control over the food in Thailand and if there is any, it is in the organic farms.

Less than a month ago I was in a store for the purchase of masonry pots, a store where they also sell chemicals to farmers, a customer asks something to the seller and my wife translates the question to me that she asks about DDT, the seller looks at me and replies negatively to the customer.
The seller knows very well that DDT is banned but he still has it for sale, sure it is still used here.
How is that because he can still buy it, and why can he still buy it, because it is still being made,
if it is no longer allowed to be made, then we will not encounter it again.

    Greetings from Hugo
