As the years go by, the pounds add up is a common complaint. What can you do about that?

The main cause of weight gain as you age is that your muscle mass slowly decreases. Your body will consist largely of fat. As a result, your resting metabolism decreases: muscles use energy almost constantly, but fat does not. In addition, as you get older you also move less. Your condition decreases somewhat and you have less energy. A kind of vicious circle ensues. If you continue to eat the same as before, you will gain weight automatically.

Women are even more unlucky because of the hormonal changes they face. After menopause, women have a lower metabolism.

Another reason you gain weight may also be that you are in a prediabetic phase: insulin resistance. The body can then no longer handle large amounts of carbohydrates, making you heavier.

Most elderly people who manage to stay slim are still very active. Of course cycling and walking do help, but strength training is also important for the elderly because it allows you to keep your muscle mass intact. You can do this in the gym, but also at home by training with weights and doing the right exercises.

Be aware of what you eat and keep moving, then you prevent obesity. It seems so simple, but you have to do it of course.

Regular swimming or / and using a cross trainer, when you don't want to cycle or walk because of the dogs or simply too hot sun or too much rain.
I use my elliptical trainer almost every day and put on a movie that keeps me mentally busy. An hour passes in no time. To cool down I have a small fan in front of me. The more expensive elliptical trainers have that built in…
Crosstrainer: cardio, but also muscle strengthening for the whole body…

Another option when gaining weight is to have your thyroid tested with a blood measurement.
My GP once told me that it slowed down in older people, with all sorts of complications, like weight gain.

Now, in my non-medical opinion, it is a bit more complex, namely, that as you get older, you also become less active, which means that your thyroid gland starts to work a bit more slowly, so that you become less active again and so on.

But maybe our site doctor has an opinion on that?

      Ruud,

Your story about a slower working thyroid gland is correct. Yet the majority of elderly people are simply too fat due to too little exercise and too many calories. For 90 percent of us, the saying every pound comes through the mouth still applies. And then only exercise more and or eat less. The benefits of exercising go far beyond weight management alone.

The story is true, but there are many ways to support the body in a simple way with natural products.
For example: drink a glass of water with a squeezed lime on an empty stomach.
In the afternoon and in the evening a glass of homemade ginger tea with lime
Do not forget to eat garlic and use cinnamon in dishes
See website greatlifeandmore.com or the YouTube channel.
It is a small addition to your diet but with positive results to prevent the above comments.

According to research, the Mediterranean diet is the healthiest for humans.
Olive oil is used extensively in this.
How do I get it in Thailand?

That you take water with lemon is a myth that has no basis. Plain water does the same.
Olive oil in Thailand? Every supermarket sells these. Just look in the oil department. There you will find olive oil in large and small bottles.

        Dear Jack,
I do not read in my response that it would say that you would lose weight from water with lime, which is your interpretation!
But you drink this in the morning to keep the pH (acidity) in your body in balance and could also contribute to the proper functioning of your liver.
But you can learn it all from the many YouTube videos on this subject.
I myself benefit a lot from it and used to drink water in the morning.

    My gastronomic muscle is overdeveloped.
i have now bought a grill and usually grill my meat, fish, vegetables.
I eat very little rice, pasta, bread or potatoes.
started with a personal trainer that I see 3 times a week for an exercise session.
hopefully this will reverse my prediabetic status, my fatty liver, my high blood pressure. otherwise it ends badly.

Before I put something in my mouth I wonder am I really hungry or is it out of habit or thirst. I now drink water throughout the day and am more aware of what I eat. Recently I have a different function where I sit more and I immediately noticed it in my weight. Now that I pay more attention and move more, I have already lost 5 kg

When I walk on the Thai beaches I see more fat mass than muscle mass. As far as the older farangs are concerned. Their Thai girlfriends look more attractive. However, in recent years obesity has also started to strike in Isaan. Even see a lot of overweight children. Being overweight is not a matter of too much money. In the Netherlands, too, it is often the less educated and paid who suffer the most.

Again and again I read that to lose weight you need to consume fewer calories, do exercise exercises, go on a diet, etc., all well and good, but that usually doesn't help in the long run.
Time and again it appears that people who go on a diet often return to their old weight and often even above it.
I don't have a monopoly on wisdom, but after a lot of study I will try to explain very briefly how you lose permanent weight and why.
THE enemy in weight gain is not fat, but sugar, too much sugar intake, sugar is quickly converted into fat by the body.
A solution to prevent weight gain is therefore to eat less sugar, which is being dumped everywhere today.
An additional solution is to switch to fat other than the fat caused by sugar, for example by using olive oil, consuming avocado, nuts, etc., that fat goes a different way in your body, is passed through the body in peace processed and not as fast as sugar, which also prevents you from getting hungry again quickly.
This is the shortest version of explanation, I hope it is clear, olive oil on your salad, avocado in a blender with green vegetables, tomatoes, onion, garlic, beetroot, flaxseeds, almonds, cashew nuts, honey, some sea salt, name but on, fruit up to a maximum of 1/3 of your blender filling, all to your own taste or preference.
Extensive explanation how, what and where, see the site of Dr, Mark Hyman, http://www.drhyman.com and learn about his method: Eat Fat, Get Thin.
Believe it or not, it works against obesity and for an extra boost to your health.
By the way, I'm not overweight, never had any problems with it, a nice BMI and use Dr. Hyman to provide my body with something healthier than sugar.
And then this, sugar is also the super gasoline of cancer, cause of obesity and diabetes.
    Bon appetit and stay healthy.

It is and remains a simple addition: taking in more calories than you expend leads to weight gain. It doesn't matter what form those calories come in - although all diet gurus try to make you believe otherwise.
