Dear Martin,

I've had a cough for about two months now. Had an X-ray made today at a clinic in Laos. The doctor came to the conclusion that it is a LUNG INFLECTION. She thought it would be better to go to Thailand for treatment. She said that she actually does not have the right medicines for it.

The photo shows white spots at the bottom left and right of the lobes of the lungs. She further indicated that it probably concerns an admission to the hospital. Something that surprises me. I feel reasonably fit, I do cough, but I'm not really tired. This is evident from the fact that I do a bike ride of about 15 km three to four times a week (also done today).

Do you have any advice on how I should start the interview with the hospital. My intention is to do everything out-patient if at all possible.

  • Age: 70 years
  • Medications: None
  • Smoking: No
  • Drink: Very, very moderate
  • Sporty: cycle three to four laps of 15 km uphill and downhill on a bicycle WITHOUT gears.

Regards,

J.

Dear J,

Politely tell the hospital that you only want outpatient treatment, but that you want to come back for a check-up X-ray. It is normal that you are admitted with bilateral pneumonia.

If it takes a while before you can go to the hospital, I advise you to buy Cefixime 400. The first day 2, then 1 capsule per day. That is an antibiotic that usually works well. Of course I don't know if you are allergic to certain medicines.

Pneumonia is a serious illness that should not be taken lightly.

Sincerely,

Dr. Maarten
