Dear Martin,

My name is H, I am 78 years old, 1.67 meters tall and weigh 74 kilos. I don't smoke and drink only moderately. I have been struggling with kidney problems for more than two years, for which I am being treated by a specialized doctor, who now also treats my other conditions.

A few weeks ago I started experiencing severe itching in the back of my right leg. The skin began to peel, similar to after sunburn. Vaseline brought some relief. The itching has now disappeared, but my doctor says I have a skin infection. He prescribed me Clindamycin.

However, after the first intake I developed severe stomach pain, followed by pain in my esophagus. I felt everything I ate or drank down my back. This morning after breakfast I had severe pain in my chest and back. This felt different from a heart attack, more like I was on fire.

After visiting the doctor I had to stop taking Clindamycin immediately. He prescribed me Clproflex, Garzym and Tumax, one tablet each twice a day (the dosage is unknown to me).

I am now somewhat confused and would like your advice on what to do.

Yours faithfully,

H.

Dear h,

You apparently had a harsh reaction to the Clindamycin. Hope things go better with the Cipraflex, although oral antibiotics seem a bit too much in your case. I cannot determine whether there has been an infection. Nothing can be seen about this in the lab.

Are you taking anticoagulants (blood thinners)?

Your kidneys are indeed not in the best condition. Is that special doctor a nephrologist (kidney specialist)? Pay attention to your blood pressure and sugar. Both are bad for your kidneys.

I don't know what Garzym is. You can stop taking Tumax when the gastrointestinal complaints have disappeared.

Drink a lot of water.

Yours faithfully,

Dr. Maarten
