Dear Martin,
I have been living in Thailand for almost 20 years and I am still hesitant about the number of medicines doctors prescribe. I am now worried about my own 10-year-old daughter and the medicines she has been given.
She suffered from a clogged ear and went to an ENT doctor in a clinic. He inserted a probe deep into her nose and extracted a lot of mucus. He said her ear was not blocked.
Prescribed medication:
Rinse with saline solution NasalFresh. Doesn't seem like a problem to me. What I do have problems with are the following medicines, I do worry about them: She hasn't taken them yet.
- Bactoclav-625 (550mg/125mg) 3x per day
- Pseudoephedrine Hcl 60mg 3x a day
- Unknown pill 2x a day and another unknown pill 2 pills 2x a day.
My daughter is otherwise lively and healthy.
Really appreciate your advice.
J.

Dear J,
Your daughter has been given an antibiotic (Bactoclav). Whether that is necessary I cannot judge. Usually it is not necessary.
I would never prescribe pseudoephedrine. It simply does not work and does have side effects.
I wouldn't give the nameless pills either.
Probably the whole problem could have been solved with a nose drop and steaming twice a day with salt water, or water with Vicks dissolved in it.
It's the time of year for nose colds.
Yours faithfully,
Dr. Maarten
