Dear Martin,

I am 58 years old and since about 4 weeks I use aspirin Ascot 100 to replace carbasalate calcium 81 (sandoz) as a blood thinner. But shortly afterwards I suffered from a red pimple-like rash which keeps moving on the chest and locally on my arms. And besides, my stomach hurts even more, especially in the evening (I already had stomach problems, no heartburn – researched in the Netherlands without results — but now it has gotten worse).

I also use blood pressure lowering medication Anapril 5mg and Thyroxine 125 micrograms for the thyroid glands.
I smoke and am somewhat overweight.

Are there alternatives to the blood thinner since carbasalate calcium is not available here?

Sincerely,

G.

Dear G,

There are many anticoagulants on the market. You could start taking Clopidrogel. That is much more expensive.

Why do you take aspirin? Maybe you can do without. Furthermore, it is of course good to know whether the aspirin is the cause of the red pimples. So stop it for a while and see if they go away. If so and they come back, if you start again, then there is an indication that you are having an allergic reaction.

The rash may also be a common heat rash. See for that: /www.thailandblog.nl/gezondheid-2/zonne-allergy-en-heat-rash-of-prickly-heat-oorzaken-van-hevige-jeuk/

Carbalaat also contains aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), but it is more soluble, so that less stomach complaints would occur.
For stomach upset you can take Omeprazole 20 before breakfast.

Yours faithfully,

Dr. Maarten
