The corona vaccinations will also start soon in Thailand and that is good news in itself. Inoculation (also vaccination) is the injection of a vaccine into the body that will cause it to make antibodies to prevent the potentially deadly infectious disease COVID-19. It is less good news for people who are afraid of needles, say suffer from fear of needles.

puncture fear

No one likes jabbing, but for most people it's a matter of gritting your teeth and then it's over. However, the fear of needles is so great in many people that even images of corona shots on TV can make them faint, dizzy or vomit. Regular attention is paid to this design on television, press and other social media

In a recent article in the Algemeen Dagblad, a neuroscientist says: “It is a very difficult problem that even the sweetest nurse cannot explain away. They sometimes even see people become aggressive under the influence of their fear. The strange thing is that the person being pricked knows very well that it is "just a prick" and it often doesn't hurt. They are such unconscious processes in your brain and in your body that you have no control over them. There is no scientific explanation for needlestick fear (yet).

What can you do about needlestick fear?

Relaxing is the keyword. You get an injection in your upper arm; if you tighten it because you are tense, the injection will hurt more. This puts you in a negative spiral, because the more it hurts, the more tense you are next time. Try to think of something else. What often helps is to put in earphones and put on some pleasant music.''

If that fear takes on major forms, it is wise to make it known. There are therapies available to try and manage those feelings of anxiety, I recently saw one that even used nitrous oxide as a relaxant.

Prick fear in Thailand

Whether there is also a fear of needlesticks among the Thai population I do not know, at least I have not (yet) read or seen anything about it. For the blog readers, who regularly travel to Thailand or even live there, the stinging in itself will not be a real problem, I think. Most, like me, will have experienced a lot of vaccinations, just to be allowed to travel to certain countries.

What I do encounter on social media is the doubt. Are the new vaccines reliable, is the cure worse than the disease, should my vaccine come from Europe, China or Russia and do I have a say in that? With the low numbers of infections and fatalities in Thailand, is it necessary to take the vaccination? In other words, do I actually want to be vaccinated against the coronavirus?

For myself, I have already decided to participate in the vaccinations in Thailand as soon as the opportunity is offered to me.

How do you feel about that?

When I have blood drawn, I often see the Thai with a turned away head.
So yes, they know needlestick fear.

    And my fear of needles?
I only know it from my mother's story.
As a toddler / preschooler I had to be poked for one thing or another.
We were waiting our turn in a room with many more parents and children quietly waiting their turn.
When it was my turn I screamed a lot and when we left we left behind a few angry sisters and a room full of screaming children.

Now I just see if they're draining the blood properly.

If the opportunity arises to be vaccinated with the Pfizer, Moderna vaccine or similar vaccine, I will immediately go to the front. The chance that it will be easier to re-enter Thailand seems very plausible to me. However, I know that if the sun rises every day, nothing is certain.

The only thing that is certain is that vaccinations help very well. In Israel, where 1/3 of the population has already been vaccinated, huge shifts are occurring and many still need to be vaccinated. The age in ICU has dropped from 70 years to 61 years, for example, and the other admissions due to corona have decreased 66 to 62 years.
And then a quote from the AD about the vaccinations in Israel: Data up to February 11 shows that of the 523.000 people who have already received a second shot, only 544 people became infected with corona. Most of them had no or hardly any symptoms. 15 of them ended up in hospital. The condition of four of them was described as serious, three as moderate. None of the double vaccinated died.

You can also ask yourself if everyone will have been vaccinated in a few months' time whether there will still be infections, and then the answer is undoubtedly no, maybe even sporadically.

If you are reading this, you know that it is desirable that everyone is vaccinated

Most foreigners/Europeans Thailand are avid travelers.
They had themselves vaccinated before a holiday trip against, for example: Yellow fever, Hepatitis A and B, Rabies, Japanese encephalitis, TB, etc.
We let our children sting the noiselessly (well, they did scream a bit).
As laymen, have we checked all scientific articles to see how safe they are, how many side effects there are (could) be.
    I think 99% not.
Now suddenly almost everyone has doubts about the usefulness, safety and protection factor of the corona virus. We shouldn't let ourselves be fooled by all kinds of shouting horns who don't know either and hit you with articles that fit their thoughts.
This pandemic must be suppressed and I think vaccination is the fastest and best solution, without too many social or health problems.

Let your sober thoughts reflect on the fact that it is a virus that was "discovered" back in the 48s. So nothing new. Knowing that any type of virus can mutate is nothing new. What is really news is the fact that “suddenly” the flu has disappeared worldwide, how is that possible? We are being presented with something that is completely wrong. Almost everyone who died from the so-called corona virus did not die FROM the virus, but died together WITH underlying diseases. Just like the flu does/did. In the recent past, the shot against the flu was called the so-called flu shot, and strangely enough it is suddenly called the flu VACCINE. Think carefully before having the vaccine administered. Confirmed reports from Gibraltar have indicated that just over 50 people have died suddenly in XNUMX hours after vaccination. Also about ten in Belgium. I wish you the best of luck with your vaccine decision. But it will be clear: not for me.

      Dear Fred,

I have to be honest that I will certainly not contradict your opinion, on the contrary.

What worries me, however, is that if you DO NOT get vaccinated, you could end up with a lot of prejudice. At first I think, will you be able to travel freely?

The government can advise us to get vaccinated, they cannot legally impose a vaccination OBLIGATION. How people will react on the Thai side when refusing an injection is a matter of guesswork. I can't imagine that I'm alone with my vision (I read that, for example, in the Netherlands a quarter of the population does not want a corona vaccine...).

My main concern lies in the fact that a few pharmaceutical companies are able to bring a 'working' vaccine to the market in record time, while this completely contradicts any logical scientific explanation. Normally, the development of a safe vaccine easily takes about 10 years.

It is currently impossible for science to comment on possible long-term side effects. Question: Should we volunteer en masse as voluntary guinea pigs for our government. So no…

      • Jack S says up

What I have read is that it was possible to develop a vaccine so “quickly” precisely because this virus is a mutation of previous viruses that were less dangerous, but were in the same “family”. So in principle there was already a vaccine, just not applicable to this variant. And that is why one could quickly come up with an antidote by adapting the old one. There was no need to invent a completely new vaccine.

Anyway. I have never been vaccinated (as far as I know) against the flu. As long as I don't have to do it, I'll also wait here until I'm forced to. That has nothing to do with Covid-19, but more because I want to have as few medicines in my body as possible.

What I've also read is that you can still get Covid-19 after that vaccination, but that the effect is no longer so strong that you probably don't even have to go to a hospital. That in itself is a good reason to get vaccinated. So it argues again.

I'm not afraid of a shot. However, I am concerned about the side effects. Even if you get a little sick, it doesn't make it any better.

You see, very contradictory: on the one hand I read that it helps, on the other hand my fear that it won't get better… ooh if only I knew what I was talking about.

    • JAN says up

And what will you do if Thailand imposes a vaccination requirement in order to obtain a visa?

    • khun Moo says up

      ferd.

Viruses can go undetected for years when the number of victims is not very large.
That does not detract from the current situation now that it has made many victims worldwide.
Of course, there are many other deadly viruses in the world that animals carry that have not yet been noticed by humans.

The flu has not gone away. It is true that the flu virus is also limited by the corona measures.
Keeping distance, washing hands, avoiding large groups, wearing a mask are all measures that are not beneficial for any virus. Of course covid is in the news and not the annual flu virus which was never really news in the past.

Of course, people with underlying diseases are more likely to die from Covid or the flu.
It would be a miracle if the weak were not affected and only the very young healthy young people .

Regarding the flu shot and flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is administered with the flu shot. matter of correct word usage.

I suspect that those who do not get vaccinated will have to do a rapid test when visiting a restaurant, bar, bus, plane in the coming years.
The virus will also mutate annually, requiring a new vaccination every year.

Furthermore, it has not been shown anywhere that the deceased persons after vaccination were the result of the vaccine. In the Netherlands, more than 50 people are currently also dying daily due to covid and because they have not had a vaccine.

If this virus had not been in the news so much every day and people had just called it a new flu virus, there would not have been so much fear.
As far as the risk of death is concerned, I would avoid the car, motorcycle and buses in Thailand.
Seems much more dangerous to me.

  4. John Chiang Rai says up

Even in my childhood, when a team of school doctors visited schools to give children a certain vaccination, I would never have given up a certain fear.
It struck me even then, that often the tallest in a class with regard to vaccinations were also the biggest pagers at the same time.
Well as an adult you can think against a vaccination, so that these people also like not to take all benefits and necessities seriously, and are constantly looking for messages from like-minded people.
All kinds of possible side effects, of which nothing has yet been proven, are made up by these like-minded vaccination experts in order to convince others of these embarrassing side effects.
Alleged side effects, in which very many smoke daily, drink alcohol, and consume all kinds of treated meats and sprayed vegetables, and have apparently found this quite normal for years.
With all the fear, or being interesting about possible undiscovered side effects, many completely ignore the fact that the already known side effects of death and permanent injury caused by the covid-19 virus are many times worse.
Of course we can massively refuse a vaccination out of fear or other thoughts, and hope that with 10 years of lockdowns and wearing masks, we won't get covid-19, but I want to live now.
Hence no fear, all other alternatives, with the question of how long we can sustain this economically at all, are no life for me in the long run.

Had my first Covid vaccination in the Netherlands last week and can assure you that you hardly feel anything. In the evening a somewhat sensitive upper arm and that was soon over. Doing!

    • Johan says up

      joseph,

The only use of this vaccine is that you (normally) cannot get sick yourself if you are infected by the Coronavirus.

What many people don't know is that, even with a vaccine, you can still infect others perfectly. Isn't this a dangerous situation? Most certainly, many will not even know if they are carriers of the virus or not and will move freely in society, with all the consequences that entails.

Everyone is of course free in their decision. Getting vaccinated is only for your own safety - unfortunately not for anyone else's. And unfortunately there is not a word about that.

      • khun Moo says up

it has not been scientifically proven anywhere that when you are vaccinated you can still infect others. It has not yet been proven that you could not do this. It is still under investigation.

      • Sjoerd says up

Yes, Johan, but that problem (that a vaccinated person may still be able to infect others) will be solved if enough people get vaccinated.

  8. Rob says up

Dear readers, let's stop displaying all the pros and cons here, almost everyone seems to be an expert at the moment.
Just decide for yourself whether or not to have a vaccine injected, and maybe we will meet somewhere else after our earthly life and then we can determine together whether or not it was useful to have you vaccinated.
    Regards Rob

    • khun Moo says up

      rob,

I would also consider that unvaccinated people can cause hospitals to become overloaded and that the situation may even arise where patients have to be refused and left to their fate. We have already seen that heart operations and cancer treatments had to be postponed due to lack of space and staff. This is due to the fact that corona patients absorbed a large part of the hospital capacity.

Furthermore, a person who does not want to be vaccinated can still infect someone who has not yet received a vaccine.

Viruses can also mutate as long as the virus is still circulating. Unvaccinated people also contribute to this. Apart from the fact that the necessary lock downs may arise again and the economy will become even further disrupted.

Deciding only for yourself therefore appears to have a major impact on others and on society as a whole.

  9. Sjoerd says up

Dear Ferd, You say that 53 people have died in Gibraltar after vaccination.
You consulted the wrong source. ALWAYS check if it is correct.
So your statement is INCORRECT: https://www.gibraltar.gov.gi/press-releases/no-deaths-arising-from-vaccinations-in-gibraltar-932021-6638

(“Of the over 11,000 who have been vaccinated, 6 persons have since died for reasons unrelated to the vaccination and there is no evidence to link these to the vaccination in any way. According to the government, these six people appear to have caught Covid -19 before they were vaccinated.”)

Indeed, a TOTAL of 53 people have died in Gibraltar. Some due to Covid, not because of the vaccination!!!
Of the 11.000 people who were vaccinated, 6 died (70+ people).

    Another source:
    https://fullfact.org/online/gibraltar-covid-vaccine/

Facebook has also stated that this is a “false claim”.

  10. Sjoerd says up

    Dear Johan,

The fact that 25% of the NLers do not want to be vaccinated is not correct: that is 1 in 6, or 16.7%.
    https://eenvandaag.avrotros.nl/panels/opiniepanel/alle-uitslagen/item/de-vaccinatiebereiheid-is-groot-bijna-1-op-de-10-twijfelt-nog-over-een-inenting-tegen-corona/

You also write this: “My concern lies mainly in the fact that a few pharmaceutical companies are able to bring a 'working' vaccine to the market in record time, while this completely contradicts any logical scientific explanation. Normally, the development of a safe vaccine easily takes about 10 years.”

“Goes against any logical scientific explanation”??? Are you scientist? Microbiologist? Virologist? I'm afraid you haven't dabbled in the latest science. The current vaccines are actually safer than the vaccines of the past, which were a weakened form of a virus.
    https://www.volkskrant.nl/nieuws-achtergrond/genetisch-aangepaste-vaccins-waarom-mag-dat-met-corona-ineens-wel~b026e2de/
The latest techniques are used to make vaccines that no longer have the properties of a virus in the sense that it cannot multiply, but that do evoke an immune response

And rapidly developed? The mRNA technique behind many of the current vaccines has been developed in 20 years !!!
This was already done in 2017 (at BionTech, among others) and there was then a cure for skin cancer. In a few days this was made suitable for combating the corona virus!
    https://www.volkskrant.nl/wetenschap/de-grote-belofte-van-de-techniek-achter-de-coronavaccins~b00d2033/

Yes, a great development has taken place that took a long time, but with this new technique one can now develop new vaccines at lightning speed!!!

    https://www.volkskrant.nl/nieuws-achtergrond/het-vaccin-is-het-geesteskind-van-een-idealistisch-duits-turks-oncologenechtpaar~b3070479/
“BioNTech does this with RNA molecules, strings of genetic programming language that prompt cells to make their own, tailor-made immune substances, which then have to attack metastatic tumours, melanomas and pancreatic cancers.”
“But it is also possible with infectious diseases, Şahin knew. In 2019, his company had already made an agreement with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to work on vaccines against tuberculosis and HIV. Because anyone who can program the body a bit with RNA can, in theory, also teach it to ward off viruses or bacteria.”

In short, first immerse yourself in the matter and don't just frighten people!

  11. Sjoerd says up

And here's another message for people who are suspicious of the rapid development of corona vaccines:

    https://www.volkskrant.nl/nieuws-achtergrond/hoe-weet-je-of-een-vaccin-tegen-corona-dat-zo-snel-ontwikkeld-is-op-de-lange-termijn-wel-veilig-is~b68cc9a4/

“The vaccines are benefiting in more ways than one. For example, the vaccines that are now almost ready were already in development against other diseases, such as Ebola (Janssen's vaccine), Mers (Oxford's vaccine) or cancer (Pfizer's vaccine), so they only had to be modified. Corona is a relatively straightforward virus, without the complicated molecular tricks that make a vaccine against HIV, for example, so difficult. And, but true, the disease is raging everywhere: there is no shortage of test subjects. "That's an advantage of this whole situation," Coutinho points out.

  12. Hans says up

You can discuss endlessly about whether or not to vaccinate. One thing is clear: if you travel a lot internationally, you actually have no choice. Just note: after the summer, traveling without vaccination will become almost impossible, regardless of whether that is justified or not.

We'll see how it goes. I've even gone for a shot of my stick myself.

  14. Roger says up

Sjoerd, if we have to believe everything that is written in the newspapers, then we are far from home.

The media was, and still is, somewhere misused for spreading a lot of incorrect information regarding the Covid virus. Forcing a vaccine on us by depriving us of certain privileges (e.g. by banning travel) is a dangerous precedent. Just like the people who choose to get vaccinated, the 'thinking differently' have an equal right to refuse a vaccine. I have not yet decided what I will do.

I read above that people are asking what you will do if the Thai government requires a vaccine to obtain your visa. Rest assured it won't come to that. And now enjoy the beautiful weather 😉

    Roger

    • khun Moo says up

I read above that people are asking what you will do if the Thai government requires a vaccine to obtain your visa.

Isn't it the case that people from Africa in Thailand, for example, must already have proof that they have been vaccinated against cholera, typhus and that proof of vaccination for certain countries has been there for a long time.

Obtaining a visa does not automatically mean that you can enter Thailand.
The immigration service can still refuse you.

My idea is that proof of vaccination will be requested in the coming years or whether there will be a quarantine.

      • RonnyLatYa says up

That is indeed already the case for Yellow Fever. Both upon application and upon entry into Thailand.
Not only if you live in those countries, but also if you come to Thailand via these countries.

        https://hague.thaiembassy.org/th/page/76481-list-of-countries-which-require-international-health-certificate-for-yellow-fever-vaccination

But even if you apply for certain visas (including STV, OA, OX,…) you must prove with the application that you do not suffer from leprosy, tuberculosis, drug addiction, elephantiasis, third phase of syphilis
