Editors' Notes: Thailandblog multilingual, now available in English, German, French and Thai
We are happy to report that Thailandblog is now available in several languages: English, German, French and of course Thai.
How did we manage this? With a little help from our friend, the GTranslate plugin that uses Google Translate. This amazing piece of technology makes it easy for anyone to read our stories and insights about Thailand, no matter what language you speak.
This may allow us to reach even more readers. And from now on you can let your Thai partner read along with Thailandblog!
In the left column you can select the desired language (see picture above).
Welcome aboard and happy reading!
For anyone who wants to know more about this plugin: https://gtranslate.io/#features en https://gtranslate.io/?xyz=998#faq
Nice for the Thai partner (m/f) who wonders what that white nose (m/f) is doing on this blog. Or better yet, to discuss certain topics that come up here together. 🙂 Won't interest every Thai but still.
For now, every time you come to this blog, it will flip to English.
Beauty flaw?
Whether it has much added value, everyone can decide for themselves, I think it's not too bad.
We look at your own settings and from which country your IP address comes. All international websites and Google do that too.
For the time being I always get it in English and I always have to correct the language and I have never experienced that a site with a different language changes language completely automatically regardless of where my IP address is listed and the site comes from.
Do I have a writing assistant in Firefox because of the language nazis here and there that can clash, but doesn't seem realistic to me.
It is in Dutch.
No idea then, may have to do with settings. And otherwise live in the Netherlands 😉
Does it look at the language settings of the operating system or the browser? Or if both (since it also looks at country of residence), which has the highest priority in determining which language it will serve?
I suspect that there are quite a few TB readers residing in Thailand who have an English-language Windows, because that would mean that many see the site in English. If it looks at the browser, that would be easier to set to Dutch, when surfing the net you hardly notice the language settings of the browser. Must this have been indicated (whether or not during the installation of the browser, which may be set to English by default, especially if the operating system was already set to English).
For anyone who wants to know more about this plugin: https://gtranslate.io/#features en https://gtranslate.io/?xyz=998#faq
So the plugin looks at the language of the browser, which also makes the most sense. One computer can be used in a multilingual household. Looking at the language of the browser (and not the operating system) is the most dynamic. So the TB reader must be at hand enough to set to Dutch in the browser settings.
They also indicate where you can set this, by typing the following in the address bar (you can also reach it by searching for the settings button yourself! Often at the top right of the browser):
– Chrome: chrome://settings/languages
– Firefox: about:preferences#general
– Opera: opera://settings/languages
– MS Edge: edge://settings/languages
I wonder how well the, especially somewhat older TB reader, can handle this. Some will not understand that the site is now suddenly in English or Thai…
Of course most TB readers in Thailand have an English Windows version.
It would be much easier if I could 'fix' the language to Dutch. Apparently that is not possible here. And converting to French and German is certainly not possible. It is English or Dutch.
He's not talking about windows, he's talking about the browser language which is quite different.
@ William Korat
on my pc in the task bar just next to the clock I see NLD, if you say ENG you can adjust that.
Regards, Josh M
Thanks for the hint Jos M, but it also says NLD with me.
When I visit the site it is really less than a sec. I now see on NLD and then immediately jumps to English.
It translates quickly and well, but I prefer Dutch because that is what this site is.
All other options such as manual selection or Google at all other sites are fine, do not read language changes without command except here.
Bought a whole HP set here a few years ago, strange.
At the bottom right of the taskbar is the language of your keyboard input.
The plugin looks at the language setting of your BROWSER. In most cases you can check this by clicking on the icon with “3 dots” (Chrome, MS Edge), “3 bars” (Firefox) at the top right of the internet screen. A menu opens, and there you choose SETTINGS / settings and then navigate to LANGUAGE / language.
Or go directly to the language settings of your browser in the white address bar at the top (where now https://www.thailandblog.nl/van-de-redactie/…. state), typing the address/URL I gave in my 10:46 response.
– Chrome: chrome://settings/languages
– Firefox: about:preferences#general
– Opera: opera://settings/languages
– MS Edge: edge://settings/languages
Thanks Rob, learned something new.
Resolved again Rob V, thanks.
CORRECTION: I previously sent a comment stating that this new addition was not working properly.
That was not correct.
If you set a language, the language used appears in the bar with tabs on the right.
But as the editors already wrote (and which I read over) the drop-down menu of the optional languages is on the left under the twitter banner.
My apologies for my inattention and the resulting criticism that you can and should not consider written.
I'll be more careful from now on...
No point.
Hi Peter,
don't forget Bahasa Indonesia…HUGE potential.
Cheers
hGk
Peter,
text defaults to English while I log in from the Netherlands without vpn.
Rob V. has explained how you can adjust that, so read on.
Noticed yesterday and wondered what I had done wrong to see everything in English on the site. But now it's clear.
A wonderful initiative and I am sure that Thailandblog not only has a first with this, but will also reach many more readers.
Congrats!
Extraordinary this! I see that the comments below the text and in the left column are also displayed in the other language. I don't get the William-Korat problem.
I'll look for that plugin as well. Currently translating a French booklet from the fifties (Contes et Légendes de Thaïlande) and as the years go by, French in particular becomes more difficult to translate.
An enrichment of Thailandblog. Because I get my pension from Germany and can't really do much with the Dutch system (ok, when I turn 67, I might get 200 Euro AOW), it's good if German contributions come and I can also share my experience.
The only English-language blog worth a bit of reading is the former Thai-Visa, I believe it's now called Thailand News. But that is so big that it is almost invisible.
The Germans don't have a good blog at all. The only forums you will find in the German language are on Facebook, but they are nowhere near the quality of this forum.
Sjaak S, you are now a bit dependent on my comment. The question then is whether the editors can post your contributions in German and my contributions in French via that language thing in NL in the blog.
But we know the busy schedule of the editors, so I am prepared to take on the translation myself. Brain gymnastics will stop Herr Dr Alois Alzheimer's, I hope... Hiring software is also possible.
Erik, here you can again use a translation program or chatgpt that puts your text in the desired language. But if that plugin works well, it is not necessary.
It would be good if the themes were expanded to the specific countries (as long as it is related to the central theme Thailand)
Very annoying that I can't pin it to the language I want.
I've been speaking English all day and that's not my Moers language.
I therefore enjoy reading Thailand blog in my Moers language, so Dutch.
Now I have to make a choice every time for every topic I want to read.
My browser is set to English because, as I said, I communicate in English all day long.
Progress is good but this is one of the side effects of the drug and something needs to be done about it.
When I go to a Dutch website via my browser, it is not suddenly changed to English because my browser is in English.
I understand that you want to give freedom of choice, but the choice is now mainly a direction and for me everything from you is converted into English, where I miss the nuances of the Dutch language.
I hope something can be done here.
The first choice should be like standard Dutch.
Then I decide for myself which language I want more and can possibly lock it to that.
good luck
With regards
Piotr
please after pressing dutch once, then also for the entire site in dutch, so please don't go for each item separately
thanks ronald
