Schiphol expects an increase in the number of travelers in the coming period. In order to continue to travel safely and responsibly, Schiphol has recently taken many measures in the field of hygiene, keeping a distance of one and a half meters and traveler communication. Those measures will be maintained.

The basis for these measures are the protocols drawn up by the airlines and airports. These protocols are in line with the advice issued by RIVM in this regard and have been drawn up in close consultation with the government, the aviation sector and the safety regions involved.

Safe and responsible travel through the airport

The following applies to the airport: do not come if you have complaints, keep a distance of one and a half meters and adhere to the hygiene rules. In addition, from Monday 15 June, travelers will be required to wear a face mask in places where, partly due to the internationally established requirements related to the safety and security of the airport, maintaining the one and a half meter distance cannot be guaranteed everywhere and at all times. In practice, this means that a face mask is prescribed to travelers as an additional measure at and at the location of check-in, security and border processes and boarding. These places will be clearly marked.

Schiphol follows the guidelines of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) for these specific locations at the airport and endorses the advice of the RIVM. As of 15 June, employees at Schiphol will also wear a face mask in those places. Travelers must ensure that they have or purchase the face masks themselves.

Additional measures

In addition to wearing face masks for travelers, Schiphol will take a number of additional measures from 15 June to promote safe and responsible travel.

  • Passengers must submit a health declaration (Health Declaration) to carry.
  • In addition, Schiphol deploys so-called health observers. They walk through the terminal and are alert to potential symptoms of illness in travelers and employees. They also remind travelers and employees to regularly wash/disinfect their hands.
  • Schiphol once again strongly requests that people only enter the terminal and Schiphol Plaza if people need to be there to travel. The following applies to drop-offs and pick-ups: do not walk in with travelers, unless there is no other option. Schiphol asks them to drop the traveler off in front of the departure hall or to wait in the car in the car park.

Measures already in place at the airport

In accordance with government recommendations, measures in the field of hygiene, social distancing (the one and a half meter rule), protection and communication have already been implemented. Schiphol will continue to use this. For example, at the airport it is already indicated with stickers and lines how sufficient distance must be kept. There are splash screens in front of all check-in, transfer, ticket counters and other service points. Check-in desks and gates are occupied alternately as much as possible. Baggage carts are placed every one and a half meters at the baggage belts and the baggage from each flight is placed on a separate belt. Facilities at the airport are cleaned well, especially the places that many people come into contact with, such as the bins at security control and the sanitary facilities. There will be dispensers throughout the airport to disinfect hands. And in general, the following still applies: Do not travel if you have complaints.

Airlines

Protocols have also been drawn up for measures that apply to airlines and on board aircraft. For example, wearing non-medical face masks on board is mandatory.

Increase in travelers

From the beginning of June, there have been around 10.000 travelers and more than 200 flights to and from Schiphol every day. This number is expected to rise to 30.000 to 40.000 travelers in the coming weeks and around 350 flights per day. These developments depend, among other things, on airlines partially relaunching their network and on countries opening their borders or not. In the same period last year, the airport welcomed more than 210.000 travelers and almost 1450 flights per day.

“Don't travel if you have complaints.”
Suppose you have booked tickets to Thailand for the whole family for the fall. One of the family members catches a cold and may throw the ticket in the trash. What are the other family members doing? And what if that happens on the return journey?
