The month of April is soon approaching and that is all about Thai New Year: Songkran. The celebration of Songkran (April 13 – 15) is also known as the 'water festival' and is celebrated all over the country. Most Thais are on vacation and use Songkran to return to their hometown to ring in the New Year with family.

The tradition of Songkran originates from the ancient Brahmins of India, but is now completely absorbed into Thai culture. Houses are cleaned, the Buddha statues are washed and rituals are performed. The temples are decorated with aromatic flower garlands (Phuang malai), in short a beautiful spectacle for tourists.

All these activities symbolize gratitude to the ancestors. During Songkran, parents and grandparents are thanked by sprinkling water on their children's hands. The water symbolizes happiness and renewal.

Songkran is, as said, the festival of water. Everyone is armed with water or water pistols. These are used to throw each other wet and wish happy new year. You also see that Thai smear each other's faces with white stuff. This is one of the oldest Songkran traditions and serves as protection against evil.
