Where's the Mekong whisky?
My 52nd birthday – I had only lived in for a few years Thailand – I spent with some friends in a Thai restaurant.
One of my friends called in advance to ask if he could bring a befriended couple. Of course this was allowed, especially since this couple was Marion Bloem, writer and painter, and Ivan Wolffers, doctor and writer.
Coincidence does not exist, because Marion Bloem turned out to have the same birthday as me. She was only ten years younger and it showed.
She had brought an extremely nice present: a small bottle of Mekong, my favorite drink at the time. She had provided this bottle with a drawing. A unique work of art, signed by Marion Bloem and Ivan Wolffers. And the date.
I don't know who the two gentlemen in the picture are. Why am I telling this. Of course, because I find this amusing anecdote, but there is another reason. For years, Mekong was the national whiskey, even though it said rum on the label. And suddenly this whiskey is gone.
Does anyone know what happened? Has a major poison scandal been covered up? Were rumors that the drink would contain amphetamines true? Who can inform me? In any case, my artwork will increase in value due to this disappearance.
a fantastic gift Dick!
It is true that Mekong Wishky is not for sale, that is now the case according to my liquor store teacher in the rimping supermarket.
it remains, that scotch is much better as far as I'm concerned, and also many times cheaper than in Europe….
Yes of course that whiskey is better, or rather the whiskey drinker tastes better. Because Mekong is not whisky. It is fired from grains and Mekong from sugar cane molasses. And is therefore rum. An apple doesn't taste good when you think you're eating a pear, right?
Some more info:
Mekhong is made from 95% sugar cane/molasses and 5% rice. The spirit is then blended according to a secret recipe of native herbs and spices that provide the distinctive aroma and flavour.
Mekhong is distilled, blended and bottled at the Bangyikhan Distillery on the outskirts of Bangkok. Mekhong contains 35% alcohol and can therefore not be called whiskey, because whiskey must contain at least 40% alcohol. Mekhong is great for mixing and tastes good as an ingredient in cocktails. A delicious cocktail is the 'Sabai Sabai', also known as the Thai welcome drink.
Exactly, fired from 95 percent sugar cane molasses. And so, apart from the percentage of alcohol, it is definitely not whiskey, but rum.
Dick,
I don't know if it's true, but the rumors are circulating that 2 or more people drowned in a distillation kettle of the Mekhong brewery ???
And in order not to anger the ghosts, production has been halted.
Again, this is what I heard about a month ago, in Chayaphum??
Greetings,
William
@ I know some people who would find this a pleasant death 😉
mekong whiskey is still for sale, but it's turning and it's giving me a huge headache
I also miss my MEKHONG. You can argue about taste, but I drank it with cola and ice and it was perfect for that. Hong Tong is an alternative and, forget the name, wiskie in a black box at family market, also good.
Nice story of those drowned employees. Sad if it's real of course.
Ruud
Erik,
I don't know where you live, but here in Pattatya it is not for sale anywhere anymore ???
But maybe you know an address for me, because I don't think it's a curve and I'm already
looking for a few weeks.
The last bottle I was able to buy was at “Best” supermarket , Pattaya Klang opposite ' Tops ' !!
So, …. I adhere to commanded.
Greetings,
William
in chiang mai, they still have it
If you are interested, I imported the following for you directly from Thailand:
Mekhong Whiskey 35%
Sang Som Rum 40%
Singha Bear
Chang Bear
Krathing Daeng > the real original Thai energy drink, from which the red bull is derived and is often mixed with the Sang Sum Rum in Thailand.
Just email me, tell me what you want and I'll make sure it comes your way...
I recently started drinking Hong Tong and I read here that it gives Erik a huge headache. I woke up this week with a really terrible headache, rarely experienced like this. I had about 6 or 7 Cola with this whiskey the night before. Previously I drank Sang sum and never had any problems with it. Thought the Hong tong tasted very good, I'm a normal rum drinker and this one is nice and sweet.
see if you can get Rum from myanmar, I drink Mandalay Rum 43%% costs at the border, for example in Mae Sot, less than 100 THB 0,7 liter, mmmmmmm.delicious
I also don't get a headache from the mekhong and still drink it regularly with cola and ice
But can still buy them at Carrefour in Chon Buri.
It is only in Thai though.
Personally I think the Sang Som is way too sweet ,
I don't like the Hong Tong and the black door with Blend either
Mekong used to be, (30 years ago) also my favorite drink.
One bottle of cola for one three-quarter liter of Mekong per person was enough when we were playing chess again one evening. We then came up with completely new openings, I doubt whether they were all equally ingenious, but Max Euwe would have been amazed. In any case, it significantly increased the enjoyment of the game.
The last time I was in Thailand (2010) I didn't taste the Thai whiskey anymore.
I would now fall asleep at the age of sixty after just 2 glasses.
yes, if you ordered whiskey coke back then you often automatically got mehkong.
I remember well in the marine bar, bottle of mehkong 2 bottles of coke, and a bucket of ice for 120 baht.
The new edition Mehkong is now in circulation again!!!!
However, it is much more expensive and with a different label……….
If you are the French I know, feel free to come and grab one from us…
Greetings, Joe.
I think you are the Joop I know. I'll be sure to grab one sometime, along with Long.
You're welcome!!!!!!!!!!!
We are in the Netherlands……..until?????
Greetings from Joop & Nicolien
Hello.
About the mekong wiscky (Rum) what is or isn't true in Chiangmai, it is no longer available in Chiangrai they still had enough as long as priority lasts, probably.
a pity because I thought it was a nice drink for a considerably cheap amount and a very nice bottle.
If you like Sang Som to drink mixed with cola and ice, then I would also like to point out another article from Sang Som which I also call a nice brew to mix. The name is Simulan and it must be said that it is not for sale everywhere.
It is more than worth a try and costs 0,7 lt per bottle, around Baht 200.!
The restyled Mekhong is now available in a few supermarkets in a beautiful retro bottle of 350 milliliters and in a bottle of 700 milliliters. I wonder if the brand can make a restart after a long absence.
