At the end of the 19th century, the French government mapped the areas in the north and east of the Mekong in the famous “mission Pavie”. This area then consisted of various kingdoms and local powers, but these would soon be swallowed up in the modern nation states of Laos and Vietnam (Indochina). With the determination of the national borders and colonization by the French and English, the traditional way of life in this area came to an end.

When the French linguist, cartographer, archaeologist and globetrotter Etienne François Aymonier died on January 21, 1929, he had lived a rich and full life. As an officer in the naval infantry, he served in the Far East from 1869, especially in Cochinchine, present-day Vietnam. A Vietnamese crocodile-tailed lizard that looks like a cartoon character, a horseshoe bat that wouldn't look out of place in a Star Wars movie, and a carnivorous freshwater turtle that eats snails. These are 3 of a total of 115 special new species discovered by scientists in 2016 in the Mekong region; Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has bundled the 3 new mammal species, 11 reptiles, 11 amphibians, 2 fish species and 88 plant species in the Stranger Species report.

You will find them more and more often in the supermarkets of Thailand and the Netherlands, the farmed fish species. The sea is no longer inexhaustible and fish species such as cod, sole, sea bass, turbot and even plaice have risen in price considerably.

In Thia's house and especially behind it, it is very busy. About ten women are cooking. Banana leaves are stuffed with rice. Giant pots of meat are on the fire. The men interfere with the decoration of the house. Only now do I understand that monks are already coming tonight.
