A journalist from the Bangkok Post was instructed to look for restaurants where people can eat well at very affordable prices. She discovered that Bangkok has a lot to offer when it comes to a budget-friendly meal.

She always went out with 50 Baht in her fist and found many places to eat a gastronomically acceptable meal for this money.

Public canteens

She started by visiting the mensas of Chulalongkorn and Thammasit University, where the food for the many students is not only cheap, but the taste and quality are also very commendable. The company restaurants of state-owned companies are often also accessible to the public and are worth a visit. She mentions the canteen in the EGAT office building near the Rama IV bridge in the Bang Kruay district and the MEA company restaurant on Klong Toey on Rama IV Road. The food courts at Saint Louis Hospital on Sathon Tai Road and Phramongkutklao Hospital on Ratchawithi Road also offer a variety of tasty meals at very low prices.

Restaurants

However, the real purpose of the mission was to find “ordinary” restaurants, in which it succeeded wonderfully. I will name a few:

Khao Gaeng Nad Pob

A "wildlife" restaurant, which in the past received quite a bit of media attention because of the special things on the menu, such as frogs, eel and wild boar. Nowadays it is popular for lunch with a large choice of “khao gaeng” (rice with curry or other side dishes). The best-selling meals are "prik king kak moo" (crispy fried pork with a bundle of green beans in a red curry sauce) and "khai phalo" (hard boiled eggs in a salty/sweet stew with green curry. The restaurant is located on the Phibun Songkhram Road - near the River Rhine Condomium - in Nonthaburi, open daily from XNUMX:XNUMX am to XNUMX:XNUMX pm.

Khao Satu-Kari Nang Lerng

This no-name shop/eatery has been offering authentic Chinese curries and stews (satu) for decades. Order rice topped with a pork curry or rice with braised pork tongue. This eatery is located in Soi Supphamit, off Lan Luang Road near the Princess Lan Luang Hotel and the Nang Lerng market. It is open daily (except Sundays) from XNUMX:XNUMX am to XNUMX pm.

Nai Sai

Also an establishment with a long standing reputation, especially for their homemade “khao moo daeng” (rice with BBQ pork slices and a thick brown sauce). The menu also includes various soups, such as “jabchai” and “tom yum”. The two-unit retail property is located on Prachachuen Road between Soi's 33 and 34 and is open daily from 7 AM to 3 PM.

Sock Teuk Talad Sam Yan

This eatery in the Sam Yan district is praised by connoisseurs as the best address for the tastiest "khao moo daeng". You get a decent portion of rice with slices of roasted pork, crispy pieces of pork belly, salty Chinese sausage and a sauce.

Located in Chalalongkorn Soi 50, near the old Sam Yan market. Open daily from eight in the morning to three in the afternoon.

Joke Thong Lor

This is my personal choice when I feel like a nice Chinese style rice porridge. Aromatic rice, an authentic taste and generous portions of fresh meat, especially the tender pieces of liver and minced pork, make the "joke" a great success for this eatery. The shop is located in Sukhumvit Soi 38, opposite Soi Thong Lor. Open daily from 4pm to midnight.

All the restaurants mentioned above are in Bangkok and I realize that not everyone lives near one of them, or even not in Bangkok. Anyway, if you get to know your own environment a little bit, then there are in everything Thailand to find such cheap eateries, so that you are not directly dependent on the street trade for a cheap meal. If you know of one in your area, let us know in a comment so that fellow bloggers can benefit from it.

  1. Johnny B.G says up

There is no arguing about taste, but I suspect that this article is already a number of years old in its origin. A filled dish with good rice has not been available for about 7 years for that amount. That is more likely to be 70-80 baht per dish and that is at least 40% more expensive. An experiment to eat for 50 baht for Bangkok Post readers I don't quite understand given their readers but well..... On Ekkamai Soi 18 there is a special https://www.channelnewsasia.com/asia/thailand-bangkok-40-year-old-beef-noodle-soup-wattana-panich-864416 These are prices that also do justice to the work that everyone has to do instead of always wanting to stick to the cheapest of the cheapest.
