Thai surprises: Khao mu daeng (rice with red pork)
Today a rice dish with origins in Chinese cuisine: Char siew with rice, but in Thailand the dish is called: Khao mu daeng (Kao Moo Dang) rice with slices of red pork. Khao mu daeng (ข้าวหมูแดง) consists of slices, Thai-style Chinese char siu, which is crispy fried pork belly and is served with steamed rice, boiled duck eggs, sliced cucumber and a thickened sweet bean gravy.
The dish often comes with a bowl of broth and a few stalks of raw scallions. The dish is served with black soy sauce and chili vinegar, while nam phrik phao (Thai roasted chili paste) is optional.
Served with sliced cucumbers and green shallots, the dish is topped with a sweet bean sauce and often accompanied by black soy sauce and chili vinegar. Some varieties include nam phrik phao, a Thai roasted chili paste. This tasty dish can be found in street stalls, food halls and restaurants in Bangkok and other regions in Thailand
Khao mu crop (ข้าว หมู กรอบ) is a variation of khao mu daeng. That's khao mu daeng but without red pork. Both khao mu daeng and khao mu krop are dishes that are widely available in Thailand, such as on the street, in food courts, in markets or in the various restaurants, as well as other well-known rice dishes such as khao man kai, khao kha mu and khao na pet.
In Bangkok, there are many famous khao mu daeng restaurants in different districts, such as in Silom, Talat Phlu, Wat Trai Mit, Thanon Plaeng Nam and Sam Phraeng.
