The secrets of the mangosteen

One of the many tropical fruits available in Thailand for many months of the year, the mangosteen is also known under the names mangostan, mongoose, manggis, manggisstan and the official name garcinia mangostana.

The firm smooth skin of the ripe fruit is brownish or red-violet in color. Under the skin we find four to eight white juicy and sweet tasting segments; forming the seed coats of the fruit. The mangosteen is also called queen of fruits and let's face it: Garcinia is an enchanting feminine and regal name.

The peculiarity of the mangosteen

The deliciously juicy mangosteen is a very popular tropical and very healthy fruit. With 63 calories per 100 grams, the fruit has a low calorific value and contains no saturated fat or cholesterol. The special thing about this purple queen are her xanthones. Xanthones are powerful antioxidants that are believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, among other things. The mangosteen contains more than forty of these nutrients. The 'health net' site states that most of the ingredients are in the skin, and I – and you, dear reader – always throw them away.

According to said site, the superlatives are flying around your ears when it comes to xanthones. Healthy breathing, excellent digestion, relaxation of the muscles and building resistance are claimed characteristics.

In addition to the claims mentioned, reference is made to the effect against diabetes, osteoarthritis and even cancer. According to the 'health net', various sites are screened with quite a bit of scientific research, but the value of this is difficult to estimate because the tests were mainly done on mice and rats. To conclude with: mangosteen is actually just like with all kinds of other superfoods. You should try it for some time to see if it works for you.

Still, if we are to believe it all, the mangosteen contains a nice amount of vitamin C and minerals. Vitamin C has an antioxidant function and is needed in our body for the formation of connective tissue, the absorption of iron and the maintenance of resistance.

Fresh mangosteen also contains the vitamin B complex that is necessary for the storage and breakdown of sugar, fats and proteins. Furthermore, the fruit contains an amount of minerals, such as copper, manganese, magnesium and potassium. Potassium, together with the minerals chlorine and sodium, ensures the fluid balance in the body and has a beneficial effect on blood pressure.

Lose weight with mangosteen?

Mangosteen is hot. Apparently commerce has seen bread in this fruit and on the internet you are bombarded with advertisements about how you can lose weight in no time thanks to the mangosteen phenomenon.

The low calories, coupled with the vitamin B complex for the breakdown of fats and sugars, have opened the eyes of the commercialists wide. And don't forget that thick skin with an abundance of powerful antioxidants, there's money, a lot of money in it.

Oprah Winfrey along with The Dr. Oz Show – two American 'blah-blabbers' of the first order – were able to count the money again after the well-known TV program after they had scientifically promoted the miracle fruit in capsule form. BBC News Health, also not averse to a few bags filled with British pounds, showed how you can lose more than 10 kilos of belly fat in a month.

And then the not to be underestimated number of companies that process the peels of the mangosteen, which a normal person throws away, into pills and powders.

Had to think back to Willem van de Moosdijk, the herbalist from Brabant, whose herbal empire collapsed in 1968 after Willem Duys' program 'For the fist away'. Van de Moosdijk was subsequently convicted of fraud.

It's a shame you stopped eating this delicious fruit. One of my favorite tropical fruits so wonderfully fresh. When I come in December I hope they are there. Greetings Christina

I've also read the piece, but can't find anywhere that the writer stopped eating this fruit.

Don't dream any further, eat the fruit because you like it and it tastes even better when it comes out of the refrigerator (for me anyway)>
Now that fruit costs between 25-40 bath per kilo, I always buy 4 kilos for 2 days, so I eat 2 kg per day (gross of course), also go cycling, about 90 minutes every day, pay attention to my diet But since I've been eating that fruit every day for 5 weeks now, not a gram has been lost. I think it's purely commerce, maybe next year another discovery of a super fruit.

      Dear Fernand,

Eating the mangosteen will not make you lose weight. You have to use the specially made product, with extracts from the peel. You can see evidence of women who have lost about twenty kilos (as far as I remember) in the office of women in six months. Professor Pichaet in rachadapisek, next to the high insurance building RS, about 1 kilometer from the chopping center fortune. But personally I think that you can also lose weight without mangosteen capsules, on character right! Best regards marina

I also think it's a delicious fruit but around stories like this I never see a recommended amount to get the "maximum" result .. should I eat 1 or 20 a day ???
Have you ever read that if you eat too much of something that your body simply says goodbye to too much, not to use another word. Is 3 enough or 30 etc etc
How do you think about that??

  4. marino goossens says up

I have been taking garcinia capsules and mangosteen juice with GM-1 for two years. Thanks to Professor Pichaet, who discovered an important xanthone called GM-35 after a study of 1 years. More than 40 xantones have been discovered in the peel of the mangosteen. not all are equally good. In the long run, it can even cause side effects, if you take all the xanthomas. In the USA, the juice xango is sold with all the anti-oxidants in it. Only Professor Pichaet knows the secret, which is the most beneficial xantone. My wife had bladder cancer and was completely cured by taking Garcinia with GM-1.

I myself had a rare intestinal disease, and I was also cured thanks to taking garcinia. Now I still take two capsules daily to maintain my immunity. There is scientific evidence (not by testing on rats and mice) that it boosts the immune system of humans is strengthened. The number of white blood cells, TH1, TH2, Th17 and treg cells (t regulator cells) shows a remarkable increase. As a result, they can fight against viruses, bacteria, and cancer cells, among others. human beings have a defense mechanism that fights against diseases. When the body is under too much stress due to all kinds of reasons such as, bad eating habits, pollution, etc., then your resistance weakens and you attract all kinds of diseases. With the intake of garcinia, the number of white blood cells rises , and brings everything back into balance. Twice a week, tnn2 truemove shows a video report with witnesses about their healing on Thai TV. You can always request a personal interview with the professor in case of doubt. greetings marina

      Dear Marina,
Due to the chemotherapy, my white blood cells are broken down and then regenerated too slowly, so that my next treatment has to be postponed. I don't need to lose weight, that will happen naturally, but I would like to try those extra TH1, TH2, Th17 and Treg cells (T regulator cells). Which capsules / which brand and where to buy? I now live in Belgium...

      • Nico B says up

Dear Gerard, in case Marino stops responding, check out this site: http://www.mangosteenrd.com/home.html
I have not been able to fully investigate this yet, but on that site you will find the data and info of this Professor with his research center in Bangkok, I think you can buy these capsules there or through them an address where they can be obtained.
Maybe I'll tell you another alternative in your battle with chemotherapy:
        http://jimhumble.is
And then another possibility, look on the internet for Graviola or Sour Soup, the Durian Thet as it is called in Thailand, in NL the leaves of this plant are for sale in pots, you can make tea from that.
Of course I cannot give you any guarantees when using alternative options, that is entirely up to you, but you will understand that.
I wish you a lot of strength in your struggle, if you want to know more, post a reader's question, and reactions will be released.

Nice story, but I can't find anywhere what a 'xanthone' is. Yes, 'xanthoma', a skin defect, but I can't place that meaning in your response?

      • Marine says up

        Dear Cornelius,

The health is in the peel of the mangosteen. The active substances, xanthomas must be pulled out of the peel. Of these xanthomas, 200 have been scientifically discovered, of which 40 in the mangosteen peel. many garcinia capsules are sold but not with the beneficial gm-1 xanthoma as the professor calls it. He's an immunologist. I used to have a facebook page but it has been blocked by facebook. some scientists think they have a monopoly on the truth (like a belgian who called me dirty quack). I do not sell these products, but use these capsules daily because I know that it is beneficial.

        greetings marina

My girlfriend bought mangosteen at the market yesterday. A kilo. I could only eat one of those. They looked good from the outside, but inside there were dirty yellow, bitter spots.
Even one she had cut open for me that looked perfect, after further peeling, turned out to be riddled with those spots as well. It looks like pus from an ulcer.
I think it's a shame, because when they're really fresh, they're tasty… sour sweet. When I buy them, I check whether there are no yellow points on the skin, because then I think they have already given birth on the inside.
Is that a disease or is that just the rotting process?
How can I buy mangosteen that is fresh inside? Maybe buy at the supermarket and not at the market?
I still have a few left… later I will try to find another edible one… I'm afraid this will be in vain.

    • Nico B says up

Dear Sjaak, if you buy this fruit 2 rules, avoid the fruits with a hard skin, and, as wimol writes, the skin should be able to be pressed slightly with light pressure.
      Delicious fruit, enjoy your meal.
      Nico B

  6. Wimol says up

The greener the leaves, the fresher the mangosteen, and the brown rind should be slightly compressible. If the fruit is there like now, I eat them every day nice and chilled and let them explode in your mouth. The bigger the better.

  7. marcel says up

    @marino goossens

is it these (http://www.th17global.com/product/th17-capsule.html) that you buy, and where do you get them at a reliable address and what do they cost?

  8. marino goossens says up

    Dear,

I myself have experienced the benefits and healing power of mangosteen capsules and juice with Gm-1. My wife has been cured of bladder cancer and I of a rare intestinal disease.
It is now 1 year that I have not taken the capsules with mangosteen. Clearly feel the difference because it greatly strengthens the immunity. The th17 white blood cells increase after taking the garcinia capsules with mangosteen extract and chia seeds. These blood cells are also called the killer cells When there is a shortage of these white blood cells, people are susceptible to all kinds of diseases.

It is not true that tests were only done on mice and rats. A woman from Singapore with stomach cancer was discharged from the hospital to say goodbye to her family at home. is the one who discovered the important xanthoma Gm-1 after a study of 35 years. The woman from singapore has been completely cured of cancer.

For me, garcinia with mangosteen extract is still the best natural medicine. With a good immune system, one can overcome all diseases.

    Best regards Marino Goossens

When I saw the title I thought of a new Suske en Wiske album. But I did not know the fruit. Be sure to try it in a few months

  10. Hugo Cosyns says up

Indeed fresh Mangosteen is a tasty fruit, especially if no pesticides and other rubbish are used to grow it.

  11. Nicky says up

The peel of the mangosteen is indeed used in skin care products. And I can say with success. We also own care creams that contain this, and it indeed has a disinfectant and disinfectant effect. If I burn myself in the kitchen (which housewife doesn't do this) and I put a lick of my product on it, I don't get a blister, I feel a cold sore coming on, I put some on it and there is no further inflammation. I could go on and on like this. Many of our customers benefit from it. So for us this is certainly not a myth.

    • Caatje23 says up

I always buy the Mangosteen liquid soap and wash my face with it. Works perfectly and I don't get any itchiness or spots. So I definitely believe it is very good for my skin

  12. Caatje23 says up

Fun fact, I was told at a market in Bangkok that you can see how many segments it has by looking at the crowns at the bottom of the fruit. Doesn't add anything but fun to test. Nice to hear that my favorite fruit is also very good for humans

  13. Ronald Schutte says up

Since we are talking about Thailand it is nice to know that this (delicious) fruit Garcinia mangostana (taxonomic / biological name) which in Thaisheet: มังคุด. (pronounced mang-khoot).

  14. Mart says up

Another good property of mangosteen. Last year my girlfriend launched a toothpaste O-Dent (available at all TUMRUBTHAI stores) based on coconut oil and mangosteen (the peel) and besides being a good, almost 100% natural toothpaste, it helps excellently if you have problems with gums or sensitive skin, a property that benefits the use of mangosteen.

    Dear marina
I read your article with great interest. I wanted to contact Professor Pichaet via your link, but their email address is apparently incorrect because I am not receiving my email. Can you please help me? I have been a regular reader of Thailandblog for years and have been to Thailand many times ( even had a house there)

I think there are other ways to lose weight. No alcohol, no soft drinks, no western fast food. I eat a cup of Japanese Miso soup every day before I use it. Do this for one year now, and have already lost 9,5 kg. Keep on the weight, and the miso is also healthy food. Look at the Japanese, you are not very overweight there, they also eat a lot of miso, and have a good combination of what they eat.

Was reading eea, but it talks about Garcinia and initially Google yields a different kind of fruit. The so-called Garcinia Cambogia. So this would belong to the same family? It's actually bursting with Garcinias, I just saw in wiki.
Under Garcinia mangostana I come across the mangosteen fruit.
The first mentioned fruit has had a revival with a Dr. Oz as a garbage agent, just as the 2nd one with an Oprah then comes up. In the end, all Garnicias would be profitable then?

Soursop or soursop I had already understood that this was a very good fruit. Tasty sweet and sour fresh fruit.
You shouldn't eat the seeds though. A study has been going on since the 40s in connection with cancer control, no patent can be obtained with regard to the substances and it has again ended up in a drawer. Well and then they still ask for money for cancer research, where the "supervisor" then makes a personal move.
But it is good to eat mangosteen with skin and hair.

Unfortunately, I have to be surprised every time about the publications of miracle medicines from food in Asia. I don't understand how only one hospital or doctor has anything to do.

But for the suspicious European doctors: any product that makes a health claim will first have to prove it clinically to EFSA. Even Yakult https://www.theguardian.com/society/2010/oct/19/efsa-rules-probiotic-health-claims-unproven and Ginseng have NOT succeeded.
    also see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pichaet_Wiriyachitra en http://www.mangosteenrd.com/research05.html
    Also: https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/2083

Oh.. under the placebo effect a lot works.

Near the local market in Pattaya is a shop that sells everything that contains mangosteen.
Body lotion scrub for feet oil soap too much to mention and not expensive.
If I have a skin inflammation I put some on 2 times a day and after a few days it's gone.
They really sell everything in the store, highly recommended.
