I've been hearing more recently that immigration asks for financial proof when entering on the basis of "Visa Exemption". That must be 20 Baht. Countervalue in another currency is also allowed. Some even refused credit cards and it had to be cash.

Actually, this is nothing new and that requirement has always existed. Only it was rarely asked.

It may well be that it concerns a temporary action or it only concerns samples, but I still want to bring it to your attention so that you can take it into account.

You could live under the existing rule of 20.000 Baht in cash, under certain circumstances where no further breakdown occurs, if you do not stay in the country longer than 30 days.
Only this rule, if you deliberately don't have a credit card at all, and still assume that everything will be okay, can be called just as strange as it is extremely careless.
Actually strange rules, when you consider that for a visa of 2 months, you only have to upload bank information, which shows that you have a minimum of 500 Euros in your account.
Who is going to make a world trip of 2 months, if he / she just has 500 Euros in his bank account?
Anyway, they are rules that we have to accept without thinking, if we want to travel to Thailand.

I follow various forums and sometimes this phenomenon is indeed reported. I strongly suspect that it is used selectively by immigration in cases where they have doubts about the purpose of the trip to Thailand. For example, there was recently a lady who had come to Thailand quite often in a short time and also extended her stay in Thailand. It was suspected that this lady was not a regular tourist and therefore did not have the correct visa. Then they can ask you for 20.000 baht and there may be a hard reason to refuse entry.
