Superstitions in Thailand (part 1)

Traditions of happiness and unhappiness can be found in every culture. In Greek culture, a sugar cube found in the glove of the bride is a sign of good luck. The English believe that a spider in the bride's costume brings good luck. In the Czech Republic, beans are used instead of rice. In ancient Greek and Roman culture, the veil would ensure that the bride could not be affected by diabolical influences.

What superstitions are known in Thailand about marriage? The couple must both be born on the right day in order to live happily together. For example: A man born on Sunday suits a woman born on Monday, a man born on Friday suits a woman born on Tuesday or vice versa, etc. Therefore, the question of a Thai partner on which day someone was born is very important and not just a little bit of interest.

Conversely, if someone was born on Monday, one should not marry someone who saw the light of day on Thursday or the combination of Sunday with Tuesday, etc. The Romans marked their lucky day with white chalk, while the unlucky day was indicated with a black color. Friday is generally marked in tradition as an unlucky day by two events. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ took place on Friday. Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit on Friday and were expelled from Paradise.

In Thailand, each day of the week is marked by a special posture of Buddha and is connected to the day of birth. Everyone knows his or her birthday this way. In the piece I deliberately write birthday instead of birthday, because the Thai people fill this in differently than the people in the Netherlands, for example they go to the temple to commemorate the birthday, only after that possibly a party in the evening.

In the Thai temple there are 8 (not 7) small Buddha statues with a collection box. By giving money on the day of birth, one hopes for prosperity or blessings. For example, the "Sunday" Buddha figurine has hands crossed over the chest, the right hand over the left hand, the outside of the hand facing outwards, and the eyes opened as a sign of spiritual insight. Wednesday is split in two, born in the morning before twelve o'clock or in the afternoon after that time. The afternoon Buddha image shows an elephant and a monkey making an offering to Buddha. In the Saturday image, Buddha is protected from the rain by a seven-headed serpent (Naga) during a meditation.

So far some things that are important to Thai people.

When I bought my scooter here,
if I only pay it on Saturday and pick it up from my wife,
because I can avoid that through accidents
and the color was also important.
She is also right at the beginning
(the first day when i met her)
of our relationship first studies my hand lines for a long time
and then studies and calculates my birth date
and apparently it was all good and that's why we've been happy together for 9 years!

Can live with it (so far).
I look at all the superstitions with a smile. In that respect, I am a down-to-earth Dutchman.
Buy one of these every time you go on a long drive, mumble a bit and hang it on the rear view mirror.
New motorbike must of course be blessed by the monk.
The rainy season is over, so I thought… let's start building the house.
Well, first past the monk, who picks the correct date/time.
Wait a while then. November 25 at 09.06 in the morning you can start.
Already read what awaits when the house is finally finished.
Also the Tuesday (she) and the undersigned on Thursday as the day of birth seems to fit perfectly.

Now we also want to expand the family. She would like a daughter most of all.
I now seem to have to work every day for that.
And I had never heard of this last one elsewhere.
    Allright then. I'll adapt..... 🙂

My ex wouldn't let my daughter walk barefoot on the tiles in our living room because it would give her a stomach ache…
And there are several other things to keep in mind…
When my ex recently arrived in Belgium and she saw a woman or girl walking alone on the street at night, she asked me if they weren't afraid of the ghosts!? After a stay of at least 5 years, that superstition has now disappeared, but some things still linger...
