In the eastern provinces of Isan you will encounter a variety of special temples. As in Ubon Ratchathani, this city is located on the north side of the Mun River and was founded by Lao immigrants towards the end of the 18th century.

The city is known for a number of special temples such as the Wat Tung Sri Muang with its wooden antique library in the traditional Thai style. A copy of the chedi of Bodhgaya has been built in Wat Nong Bua.

The province of Sisaket is home to the 'Beer Bottle Temple' at the hamlet of Khun Han, close to the Cambodian border. The official name of this remarkable temple is Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew. In itself it is not special that a building is made of recycled beer bottles, but the design of the temple complex is especially unique.
