Questioner: Hugo

Since January 1, 2021 I have been deregistered from Belgium and registered at the Belgian embassy in Bangkok. Now that the year is almost over, I wonder what should happen in connection with a possible tax return?

After all, I am retired and in other words they know my income from the taxes better than I do. Do I have to do something about tax returns or just wait until I get a message?

Does anyone have experience with this and are there any advantages or disadvantages as a non-resident taxpayer?

Please advice.

Dear Hugo, first of all: read the file: 'UNSUBSCRIBE FOR BELGIANS'. I am the author of this file and you can find it here on TB, left under: 'DOSSIERS'. There it is described exactly what you have to do regarding taxes in the chapter 'FINANCES'.

I would also advise you to read the chapter 'PENSIONS' because here too you have a few things to do, more specifically for receiving the LIFE CERTIFICATE..... So read these BOTH chapters carefully and if you have any further questions you can ask them via set TB.

Regarding Taxes:
The easiest way is to register at “www.myminfin.be”. You must have an E-ID (with card reader), or a TOKEN or an ITSME. The last two, if you don't have one yet, can only be obtained in Belgium. You may have the E-ID with card reader. You can then follow your complete file via this link and you will also receive a declaration form via this route.

If you do not wish to use 'myminfin', you can also register via email as 'taxpayer living abroad'. The Belgian embassy does NOT do that for you. Link: http://financien.belgium.be/nl/particulieren/belastingaangifte/aangifte_niet-inwoners
If you do not use myminfin, you will then receive a paper declaration form by post and this will not be until September. Just make sure your address is completely correct.

There are absolutely NO disadvantages associated with being a non-resident taxpayer. There are only a few minor benefits to it. (see file).

Best wishes for 2022,
