Bearing in mind the report of the armed robber who murdered 3 people in Lopburi and who was sentenced to death, I thought I had learned of a special event. Criminals in Thailand are not so often punished so severely, I thought.

However, nothing could be further from the truth, because earlier this week the court in Chiang Mai pronounced the death sentence for no less than 8 (eight) people in one court case. It concerned a seizure in November of last year of 500 kilos of crystal methamphetamine ("ice"), which the group of eight transported on its way to Bangkok.

The judge found this crime so serious and so bad for the community and Thailand as a whole that despite the fact that seven of the eight accused pleaded guilty, there was no room for mercy. An admission of guilt and assistance in the investigation of the crime usually carries at most life imprisonment rather than a death sentence.

The death penalty is therefore even more common than people tend to think, because according to the report there are currently about 500 people in the "death row" of Thai prisons.

The last time a death sentence was actually carried out was in 2018 when a convicted murderer was given a lethal injection. Before that, the death penalty had not been carried out for 9 years. Execution by firing squad, which has killed more than 1935 convicts since 300, was abolished in 2003.

In response to this post, the question was asked which is worse, the death penalty, where everything is forgotten and forgiven in a short time or to be locked up in a Thai prison for life. Well, I hope I never have to make that choice.

I think the death penalty in Thailand is more humane than life in a Thai prison.
I personally know someone who spent over 20 years in prison and when you hear those stories…
For example, in the evening they were given 30 seconds to brush their teeth, whoever was not ready after those 30 seconds was hit in the face with the butt of a gun, with the result that this person is now missing a number of molars and teeth .

He also said several times that he had made an attempt to end his life, he has just been out for a year now and is trying to get his life back on track with the help of family.
