Plans to upgrade internet speed to 5G in Pattaya, the abbreviation stands for the 5e generation, has sparked a storm of criticism towards Pattaya's mayor Sontaya Khunpluem. There were even plans to equip the Pattaya Beach with 5G cell towers.

It was optimistically stated that Pattaya would be ideally suited to offer this new opportunity to the many foreign tourists. The biggest criticism turned out to be the still not functioning or the malfunctioning of the 3G and 4G possibilities. People wondered in all seriousness whether 5G would suddenly start functioning.

Mayor Sontaya was advised to first deal with ordinary "earthly" things such as solving the waste problem, removing dangerous and exposed power cables, maintaining metered taxis, which don't care about anything, tackling traffic chaos by coaches and pick up taxis.

It is not the first time that the City Hall promised fast internet at the beach, as in November 2017 with the project “Pattaya City WiFi Free”. There was even a website with the login option. But to the chagrin of foreign holidaymakers, the text was only in Thai.

Those who finally managed to log in, were disappointed to find that “surfing” was only possible on the water.

  1. Carlo says up

I think Thailand has one of the best 4G in the world. I have never had any problems with it and it is many times better and faster than the Belgian one.
I do have reservations about the placement of their masts. She's one just next to Flipper Lodge's robbery swim bowl that makes me think I'm in a microwave oven.
