Artifacts back to Thailand

The posts sometimes raise questions about whether you can take Buddha figurines or other old objects with you after a holiday. Caution is advised in that area.

The Ministry of Culture now wants a number of ancient Thai culture objects returned from abroad. These are objects with a demonstrable antiquarian historical history. For example, 14 antique objects are in the possession of the Honolulu Art Museum in the United States. One of them is a bronze prehistoric bell and a Buddha statue from the Ayutthaya era. The Thai ministry would like to receive these back.

A request has come from America to send a delegation from Thailand to verify 69 other art treasures, all from prehistoric times and presumably from Thailand. These are stored in museums in the United States. They contain bronze bracelets and painted pottery items.

It is to be hoped that when these objects return, they will not disappear into the designated depots, but will remain accessible to the public.

Lodewijk, as far as you know, this new policy from the Ministry of Culture will also mean that the Thai government will also become more tolerant of allowing the importation of original antique Thai statues to the country of origin, i.e. to Thailand return, which are acquired by individuals residing in Thailand at international antique auctions outside Thailand ???
