With the electric plane to Thailand?

The electric car, bus and bicycle are already here and there is even an electric plane. For now only with two occupants: the pilot and co-pilot. Will there be passengers in the future and will we eventually also be able to fly electrically to Thailand?

That is probably possible in the future, according to aviation experts, but there are still so many snags that it will only be an issue in the distant future.

A long holiday in an e-plane is not feasible because an electric plane has to be lifted off the ground. Then you need much more energy than, for example, for an electric car.

For example, sixty times more energy can be stored in a kilo of kerosene than in a kilo of battery, says Joris Melkert, TU Delft aviation expert, in an article by the NOS.

So before we can all buy tickets for an electric plane, according to Melkert, more energy must be able to be stored in a battery. The aviation expert does think that these batteries will develop one day. Flying completely on electricity is not an option for the time being. According to Melkert, the solution therefore lies first in a hybrid aircraft. Then the battery can only help with the start, for example, and that quickly saves about 10 to 15 percent emissions.

No, we won't be doing that again. A rapid development of batteries – such as the exponential increase in transistors in computers – is not possible. Moreover, a disadvantage is that empty batteries are also heavy and have to be transported and also count towards the landing weight. It is not for nothing that the electric plane that flew above the Netherlands a few days ago went all the way from Hilversum to Soesterberg.
I also dare to predict that the number of electric cars in the world will not reach 50% before this unfortunate idea is also abandoned.
Eventually we could all switch to hydrogen, provided there are still roads that are not exclusively navigable.

    French,

I do not agree with you. I am not a doomsayer and more efficient energy storage certainly has a future. You will also experience the fact that almost all of us will drive electric cars. Just hold on 😉 Electric driving has great potential that has now made many major car makers decide to go for it. VAG, the parent company of Volkswagen and Audi, among others, has announced a billion-dollar investment.

And as for hydrogen. yes, it has enormous potential. But it will be used to generate electrical energy. Driving will really be electric.
