Nearly 22,2 million passengers flew via Schiphol and the four regional airports in the third quarter of 2017. That is 6,8 percent more than one year previously. In the summer months of July and August, record numbers of passengers were again processed at Schiphol, Eindhoven and Rotterdam The Hague. This is reported by Statistics Netherlands in the Aviation Quarterly Monitor.

Nearly 19,8 million passengers traveled via Schiphol in the third quarter, an increase of 6,1 percent compared to a year earlier. The number of arriving and departing passengers at Schiphol has been increasing since the third quarter of 2010. This year saw two months for the first time, July and August, in which more than 6,7 million passengers per month flew via Amsterdam. The busiest day was in the middle of this period, on 28 July. On this Friday, a total of 235 thousand passengers flew to and from Schiphol.

Busiest summer ever for Eindhoven and Rotterdam

It was also busy at the regional airports in the third quarter. The two largest regional airports, Eindhoven and Rotterdam The Hague Airport, experienced their busiest summer ever this year. Eindhoven received almost 1,7 million passengers, 10,8 percent more than in the third quarter of 2016. 577 thousand passengers flew via Rotterdam The Hague, 17,1 percent more than one year previously. At both airports, Malaga and Faro were in the top 3 most popular destinations. In addition, many travelers flew to Budapest from Eindhoven; from Rotterdam, Barcelona was popular.

Strongest passenger growth on Maastricht and Groningen

Passenger growth was strongest at Maastricht Aachen and Groningen Eelde. The airports had 36,7 and 32,4 percent more passengers respectively in the third quarter of 2017. The growth at Maastricht is largely due to the new destinations of Faro, Crete (Heraklion) and Palma de Mallorca. More passengers mainly flew from Groningen to and from Crete, Gran Canaria and Copenhagen. However, Maastricht and Groningen are relatively small airports. Only 0,6 percent of all passengers at Dutch airports fly via Maastricht or Groningen.
