Low-cost airline Nok Air has placed an order with Boeing for 15 new B737 aircraft. This is the largest order in the airline's 10-year history.

The purchase was already agreed in concept during the Singapore Air Show in February this year. Nok Air has opted for eight B737 next generation and seven B737 MAX aircraft. With this agreement, Nok Air becomes the first airline in Thailand to fly the 737 MAX.

Nok Air has not yet finalized the financing for the new fleet. There are various options for this, including financing with an American bank or leasing where Nok Air does become the 'owner' of the aircraft.

According to the budget airline, the delivery of the eight B737 next generation aircraft will have to take place between 2015 and 2017. The 737 MAXS will be delivered in 2018 and 2019.

Excellent that Nok Air is doing well and that new aircraft are (finally) arriving. Don't forget that Nok Air started with used devices, so second hand material. And they really need to be replaced now. After approx. 25 years of non-stop flying, a passenger aircraft simply needs to be replaced.

I am very curious where those planes will be deployed. Nok Air has cut six of its eight daily flights to Mae Sot in recent months, including daily flights to and from Chang Mai and Yangon, much to the disappointment of everyone here. There are only two flights to Bangkok left.
Delays and even cancellations of flights at the last minute are the rule rather than the exception. Several friends of mine only found out at check-in that the flight was canceled and that Nok Air offered a bus trip as an alternative.
Hopefully they will provide better service with their new planes.

I have often flown with Nok from Don Muang to Chiang Rai (and back), and that has always gone very well. Everything right on time, free drink and snack, fast check-in and friendly staff. Perfect for me. Moreover, often cheaper than Air Asia…
