Reader Submission: Check-in Baggage Excess Warning

On February 28, we flew back to the Netherlands with EVA Air. At check-in we turned out to be overweight, two suitcases together: 66.9 kg.

We already received the boarding passes, but we had to leave the luggage elsewhere and would then have to pay an additional $ 300 for it.

We had our suitcases placed on the belt again at the business class check-in desk and to our surprise the pointer stopped at 60.9 and everything was still accepted. It is therefore important to be alert on this point.

It is useful to always have a scale at hand, the device itself weighs 200 g, costs 8 euros and you keep it in your hand luggage, so you can check yourself before you go to the airport. Always handy!

Even cheaper: stand on your personal scale with and without suitcases and you know what it weighs ...

      • TheoB says up

You have to be sure that the scale still functions reasonably well.
I once experienced that the scale (on a flat, stone floor) indicated that my luggage was on the weight limit of 30kg. The scales at the check-in desk showed about 5 kg more.

Have your luggage sealed at the airport, there it will be weighed first and you can still take something out.

Thanks for this great tip. Super H. Oosterbroek

You can bring 30 kg pp, right? So that would be 6.9 too many. They charge €10,00 per kg so should cost €69,00. Do you come up with $300?

    • Nico says up

      well

€ 10 per kg, is not correct, usually a deduction is taken from the most expensive fare on that route and divided by 100 kg (average passenger)

At Emirates I had exactly the weight in the suitcase at home and at Schiphol I wrapped my suitcase and then I added my winter coat, overweight result, but yes suitcase wrapped, so just to the "service" counter, or I wanted to pay no less than “just” € 92.=. For an older winter coat.

      well, it said so.

      Greetings Nico

kg you can take with you at eva air:
    business class eva-air 40 kg
    elite class 35kg
    economy 30kg
you checked at business class…. so you can take 2 x 40 kg = 80 kg together

Tip weigh yourself first, weighing device does not cost much. Don't be surprised.

From now on stop at 7 eleven. Most have a scale outside, suitcase on it, 1 baht in it and you know exactly

  7. .adje says up

What's the problem? They made a mistake reading the weight. 66,9 instead of 60,9.
To forget is people. Don't assume intent right now. Be happy that you can take 30 kg with you at eva. With KLM only 23 kg. As most have already commented. buy a small hand scale. You can weigh everything in advance and then put it in a side pocket of your hand luggage so that you always have it at hand.

    • david h. says up

That's right about 23 kilos at KLM, but... for €80 you can take a second suitcase of 23 kilos with KLM = €3.47 per kilo..., KLM also allows hand luggage up to 12 kilos, with EVA only 7 kilos... so it depends. You can compare and choose your needs

Years ago I also had too much for the domestic flight from Schiphol to Don Muang and had to pay more for the luggage than for my ticket.

  9. petra says up

The problem is not the international flight. You can prevent this by weighing yourself. Usually it is the domestic flight that causes problems. The baggage limits are not designed for this. We solve this by traveling with as much checked baggage as is permitted. We take as little hand luggage as possible, but we do keep an empty backpack in our suitcase. In BKK, fill your empty backpack at the baggage belt and fill up the rest of your hand luggage. So we stay within the limit, without costs and hassle. Make sure that what you put in your hand luggage is allowed and within reach. This way we avoid a lot of resentment and can start our stay with a good feeling. Please note that each suitcase is weighed: 23 + 23 = 46, but this does not apply to 20 + 26. Stay creative.

When it comes to weight, every company has its own rules and sometimes you can pay the principal for a few kilos. In addition to the excellent tips mentioned above, it is sometimes better to buy extra weight in advance. This is advantageous for a number of companies; some don't! I have a shopping wife with a life-depending attitude and you better be prepared!

I always weigh my luggage before I leave and that's a good thing if I read the above story. The one scale at check-in on Bangkok SUV. so the other is not. Fortunately, the credit card did not have to be used and there was no need to repack for hand luggage in the middle of the departure hall. In Kg's nothing changes in the end, but the rules have been followed so neatly. I must say that the grams that can be read at the check-in counter are accurate to an ounce with my own weighing installation. If you are a member of an airline's loyalty program, don't you get more extra baggage kilograms with certain airlines?

I was going to check in myself 3 kg too heavy but after three times it didn't work so I went to the counter and there it was exactly 23 kg is that not strange.
I think something is wrong with checking in luggage yourself or must be made willing by human hands.

    • jhvd says up

Yeah, sorry it's just a bad story.
      Weighing and measuring is knowing.
      Bad weighing is ……….
Yes, but why is it in the fact that the customer pays, who is that customer?
      In other words, scam.
There are no other words for this.

      The customer pays.

I had it from Morocco back to Schiphol in 2013 that I had 10 kilos too much when checking in (a few large souvenirs), I was informed that the excess weight would cost 100 euros according to the desk clerk.
I then indicated that it had to be because I didn't want to leave it behind.
To my surprise, he called in a “supervisor” who told him it was no problem.
That's another way to do it!
    Was with Transavia.

At many hotels you can weigh your suitcase in the lobby before you leave.

    Also happened once.
My predecessor's suitcase was still partly on the weighing belt, had stopped too early.

Immediately report to the check-in teacher that I was overweight and that I had to pay extra.
After the check-in lady had calculated what I had to pay extra and she had printed out an invoice, I made her aware that the other bag was not mine….

Went off like a watering can, then asked nicely how long she had had this job.

We have purchased a suitcase scale ourselves (4 €) which is quite accurate. In any case, he always indicates more or less the same as at the airport. So you can always weigh your luggage at home.
It therefore goes with you in the hand luggage for the return journey. We have now purchased a second one, because we sometimes travel separately. No more problems with luggage weight

I often wonder what people have to carry around: 2x30kg hold luggage plus 2x10kg hand luggage, that's 80kg and it's still not enough. Are they going to move or is there nothing for sale in Thailand?
When I used to come to Thailand I barely had 20kg checked luggage (usually even less) and only underwear and some toiletries in hand luggage for 2 days. By the way, I didn't really enjoy having to drag heavy suitcases around here in these temperatures every time I went to another location.
If heavier items had to be transported, they were shipped in advance and not dragged along.

There are big differences, so various scales at the airports. These must be changed from time to time and this has been established. A document should be present with each scale.
weigh well at home and if there are any deviations, try a different scale and measure any differences there, ask the head of the counter employee if he can show his calibration certificate.
Another advantage is that the line behind you grew and the ladies at the counter don't really like that either
I know this from a lady who has done this job for 23 years so when we traveled together we were never overweight

    EVA-air has some strange politicians.
It starts with the ticket price, considerably more expensive when you fly from BKK (BKK-AMS-BKK)
But not only that, if you book from BKK and you fly elite you can take 35 kg with you and vv, but if you fly from AMS (Elite) you can take 40 kg with you.
Due to the fact that I fly from BKK, on my departure from AMS back to BKK, I thought, come play the game, and so had weighed 39kg, at home with me. The lady at the check-in counter pointed out to me that I was only allowed to take 35 kg, to my answer that it should be 40 she told me that only 35 kg could be taken in my name.
I'm not going to argue with it any further, but it doesn't make any sense.
To return to the ticket price, which amounted to 40600thb in Thailand, about 1080 €, in the Netherlands about 880 €, 200 € more expensive and 5 kg less to take.
