Home » Flight tickets » IATA director furious with striking Belgian air traffic controllers
It was not a very convenient choice, but air traffic controllers in Belgium laid down their work yesterday. They report sick systematically. As a result, part of the scheduled flights did not take place last night.
The strikers at Belgocontrol were not happy with a social agreement that offers air traffic controllers the opportunity to stop working from the age of 58. This was previously possible even earlier.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) condemned the strike by Belgocontrol air traffic controllers. The strikes lead to flight delays and cancellations. IATA CEO Tony Tyler calls it irresponsible behavior.
“This action is a stab in the back of all airlines and airport staff who worked hard to get air traffic moving again after the terrible terrorist attacks in Brussels three weeks ago. To carry out these actions without prior warning is irresponsible behavior and should not be expected of a highly paid professional such as an air traffic controller. It's time for governments to take steps to address this behavior," said Tyler.
Source: Belgian media
Briefly clarify the cause of this wild action with some figures.
An air traffic controller at Belgocontrol currently has a starting salary of 6200 Euro Gross per month. Most will therefore earn much more.
Not that exceptional in that world, but the requirements to become one are high, there is a great responsibility on their shoulders and the stress factor is high. That should be well rewarded. This time, however, it is not about amounts, but it is good to have an idea of it for what follows.
An air traffic controller in Belgium officially retires at the age of 63. This was decided not so long ago.
However, from the age of 55 he is put on disponibility (he no longer has to work) and this at 85 percent of his salary. That's a nice amount I think to do nothing more.
The government now wants to raise the age of availability from 55 to 58 years.
An agreement was reached on this with the largest trade union.
The problem, however, is that the union represents many Belgocontrol employees, but few traffic controllers. Almost all of them belong to the two other unions and they have rejected that agreement.
This is therefore about extending the availability age.
They will have to wait 3 years longer before going on disability and that is why they are on strike. Although, it is not officially a strike. They have reported sick en masse because they can no longer concentrate because so much injustice is being done to them...
However, concentration and stress resistance should be their greatest qualities.
Everyone can think their own way, but I think this action is outrageous.
In recent weeks, everyone has worked more than 100 percent to get the airport operational again.
These people are now putting their own interests first.
Not they got sick, but the whole country is sick of such selfish actions.
Completely agree with Ronny's reaction, pure blackmail from these employees who are well-endowed in many respects. Both the material and the immaterial damage they cause with this very disapproving action is great. Quitting at 55 is no longer of this time. Many of this age, who for whatever reason can no longer participate in the labor process, would be only too happy to go to work!
According to the website deredactie.be, the air traffic controllers did not report "ill", but "unfit". That would mean that they would not be able to concentrate sufficiently on their work. I think it's a bit of a coincidence anyway. Doesn't it take concentration to invent such an excuse?
Inability to exercise the function of air traffic controller should actually be investigated by the company's medical committee.
Maybe they should decide that those people are definitely unsuitable from now on because of their concentration problem….
Belgocontrol can then replace them.
Those “rejected” will probably be allowed to work longer than 58…. they can then concentrate on that.
“Belgocontrol can then replace them”
After 10 years, a flight controller is considered a fully-fledged ... so I see Belgocontrol finding it difficult to find an immediate replacement ... and, as with everything, Belgium is a busy, passionate country ... not just the battlefield of various nations for centuries
.
Pressurize them and I'd rather not fly in their area..!.
Have a very responsible job to take care of many lives, and sometimes have to make decisions in split seconds.
Hollywood once made a movie about it (romanticized/dramatized)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0137799/
Ground Control = title film
And so should they just give in to their conditions?
Maybe solve it like Reagan did back in the day
http://www.hln.be/hln/nl/2/Reizen/article/detail/2674467/2016/04/13/Zo-loste-Reagan-het-ooit-op-11-000-stakende-luchtverkeersleiders-in-een-ruk-ontslagen.dhtml
Completely agree Ronny. The role of the unions in this conflict is ambiguous; They apparently do not support the “action” (undoubtedly because of the timing) but they could also have sent a positive signal and asked their members not to get sick. So be it. For such generously paid professions, I maintain that there should be a clause in their contract that excludes “actions” such as this. Give a little, take a little.
To strike is to refuse work. Dismissal …..without benefits.
When factory workers, truck drivers, construction workers, etc. who have to work their ass off for something more than minimum wage, I can usually understand that, these are wage slaves who often work under wealthy bosses and are sucked out. Now, however, because an acquaintance of mine works at Eurocontrol, I know how the remunerations for air traffic controllers are, and these are huge, not to mention the secondary benefits in that industry.
If, in my opinion, this kind of overpaid people also go on strike with their well-paid wages and thereby disadvantage thousands of people and companies, no, I cannot understand or respect that and sharp sanctions from higher up are therefore desirable in my opinion .
