Big, bigger, biggest and it may cost a bit. This is how they feel in Dubai about where they unfolded the plans to make Al Maktoum International Airport the largest airport in the world.

The existing airport must then be renovated for 35 billion euros so that the capacity can be increased to 220 million passengers per year (for comparison, about 60 million passengers travel via Schiphol every year).

Al Maktoum International Airport is now the city's second airport. It was partially opened in June 2010 and is located south of Dubai.

The powerful and ruling Al Maktoum family wants the investment to be financed by banks. The entire project should be completed by 2025. Then four planes can land simultaneously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition to the ambition with Al Maktoum International Airport, the other airport, Dubai International Airport (DXB), has also been expanded. The expansion, which cost 1,2 billion dollars, means that the international airport can now handle 90 million passengers annually. Last year the counter already stood at 78 million travelers.

  1. T says up

2 of these airports in 1 such a small country is actually a bit of madness, and also very dependent on the growth of Emirates. Can only mean 1 thing Emirates will have to generate more passengers and that can only mean 1 way more scheduled services at cheaper rates. Would mean that the established aviation order can wet its chest.
