Who this weekend from Schiphol to Thailand departure should take into account the crowds at Schiphol and it is a good idea to leave for the airport on time.

The airport expects about 400.000 travelers to arrive, transfer or depart this weekend.

Schiphol has completely wrapped the airport in a Christmas atmosphere. There are 200 Christmas trees decorated with around 32.000 Christmas baubles and 650 meters of LED lighting. Dutch people on vacation

This year, just like last year, a total of about 1,8 million Dutch people will go on holiday during the Christmas holidays, NBTC Holland Marketing expects.

Compared to last year, slightly more Dutch people celebrate Christmas holidays in their own country: about 900.000 (+50.000). The number of Dutch people who take a holiday abroad falls by about 50.000 to 900.000. The Christmas holiday will take place in all regions this year from December 21, 2013 to January 5, 2014.

Slight increase in Christmas holidays in our own country

Despite the economic crisis, the Christmas holidays remain a popular time to get away from it all. The first week, around Christmas, gains some popularity. Christmas falls favorably on Wednesdays and Thursdays, which means that slightly more Dutch people go out in their own country around Christmas. More than half of domestic holidays are spent in a holiday home or bungalow. About a quarter of the Dutch opt for a hotel holiday.

Germany popular

About 900.000 Dutch people go abroad for a (short) Christmas holiday. Compared to last year, there are about 50.000 less. Germany remains the most popular destination for a foreign holiday. About a quarter of the holidays take place at our eastern neighbours. In addition, Austria, Belgium and France are popular for a foreign Christmas holiday.

It has not been announced how many Dutch people fly to Thailand for a Christmas holiday.
