In 2014, more than 60 million passengers flew through Dutch airports for the first time. 90 percent of this travels via Schiphol. The number of passengers flying via Eindhoven Airport has also risen sharply.

Schiphol is growing the fastest among the major airports in Western Europe. This is announced by Statistics Netherlands in the 'Kwartaalmonitor Luchtvaart'.

Record number of passengers processed in 2014

In 2014, more than 60 million passengers traveled through Dutch airports for the first time. This is an increase of almost five percent compared to 2013. The number of air transport movements (in commercial traffic) only increased by three percent last year. This trend has been visible for years. The use of larger aircraft and a higher occupancy rate per flight play a role in this. With 90 percent of all passengers transported, Schiphol is still the most important airport in the Netherlands. In the last five years, the number of passengers transported at this airport has increased by 26 percent to 55 million travelers in 2014.

Share of passengers transported via Eindhoven Airport is increasing

Of the national airports, Eindhoven Airport has shown the greatest growth in the number of passengers transported over the past five years. Whereas in 2009 3,7 percent of passengers in the Netherlands flew via Eindhoven, in 2014 this share was 6,5 percent. The increase from 1,7 million to 4 million travelers in the past five years is partly the result of a more than doubling of the number of destinations from this airport. Destinations in Italy, Poland and Spain have mainly been added.

Schiphol is growing fastest within Western Europe

Of the largest airports in Western Europe, Schiphol has shown the strongest growth in the number of passengers transported over the past five years. While Schiphol transported 26 percent more passengers in 2014 compared to 2009, this increase was 16 percent at Frankfurt and 11 percent at London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle. The number of passengers at Schiphol has also grown the most in the past year. This development is partly due to the lower take-off and landing costs for airlines at Schiphol.
