Bangkok in top 10 business travel destinations

The top 10 intercontinental business travel destinations for travelers from the Benelux changed considerably in 2012. Asia is becoming increasingly important. Singapore has even knocked New York off the top spot and Bangkok is a newcomer to this list.

This is evident from an analysis of the destinations in 2012 by BCD Travel, market leader in business travel management in the Benelux.

Asia offers business opportunities

BCD bases this ranking on the total number of plane and train tickets in 2012 in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Especially for the intercontinental destinations, the top 10 has changed quite a bit compared to 2011. Singapore, representing 17% of tickets, has beaten New York (15%) to the top spot. Istanbul (12%) has risen sharply to third place, pushing Dubai to fourth place. Newcomers to the list are Moscow, Bangkok and Beijing. Chicago has disappeared from the top 3, just like Houston and Curaçao.

Diederik Banken, Vice-President Commercial for Benelux at BCD, says: “Singapore's taking over from New York is clearly a result of the fast-growing economy in Asia. However, New York is holding up well in second place. And Turkey's successful progress results in third place for Istanbul, an economic springboard to surrounding countries in the Middle East and Asia.”

Business travel within Europe

As in previous years, Paris and London remain by far the most visited destinations by business travelers from the Benelux in Europe. In the Netherlands, London is at the top of the most popular destination, while in Belgium the top 10 is led by Paris. The business cities of Paris and London together represent 55% of all tickets from the top 10. Frankfurt and Munich follow with 7,6 and 6,6%. The other destinations in the top 10 are Milan, Zurich, Berlin, Copenhagen, Vienna and Strasbourg. Despite the unchanged top 4, the rest of the ranking has been shaken up considerably compared to last year.

“Destinations such as Spain and Italy are falling further and further due to the crisis. Furthermore, due to the influence of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt and Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, three German destinations are in the top 10, clear evidence of Germany's strong position in Europe,” concludes Mr Banken.

  1. l.low size says up

By other standards, this is indeed true.
Thailand, and Bangkok in particular, made a good name for itself in the market in 2012.
This according to Mr.Thongchai Sridama, who based this on the MICE industry
    data.(Meetings,Incentives,Conferencing,Exhibitions)
An increase of 19% over the stated target of 2012 with a total
    turnover of 79,8 trillion baht.
But this was due to the 10 most important Asian countries: India,
    China, South Korea, etc.

    Sincerely,

    Lodewijk
