When applying for an STV visa, it is not yet necessary to have a flight ticket reservation. This is only requested at the Thailand Pass. However, one must already have a confirmed AQ/SA+ reservation.
What if the visa is refused?

I think book somewhere and see if cancellation is possible. But in your case that only takes a day, because after that you can go to your home, right? And maybe by the time you come, only the rapid test will suffice... who knows.
But I have no experience with that and maybe readers can advise you better on this.
