Questioner: Matthew

I just read your answer to a Belgian resident about Non O and Non OA visas and insurance obtained outside Thailand. I am in possession of a Non OA visa through the Thai embassy in The Hague, valid until November 8, 2022. In July I hope to return to the Netherlands for at least 4 months and then I want to return to Thailand until April next year (2023 ) and then back to the Netherlands for at least 4 months.

Before I read your message, I planned to apply for an OA visa in the Netherlands next November, valid until November 2023 and to insure myself with Tune project for 1 year, I am 74 years old. When I would arrive in Thailand again in or around August 2023, I planned to obtain a Non O visa with a visa support letter or similar after the expiration date of my Non OA visa, assuming that no insurance would be required for this.

However, reading your story, insurance is also necessary in that case. I could get such an insurance for example from LMG (I am still under 75 years old) or hope that the Dutch health insurance will be accepted by then.

In the first case I have lost a lot of money for a double - worthless - insurance and in the second case, if the health insurance is not yet accepted, I have an even bigger problem.

In short if you are reading this what is your advice. Having to return to the Netherlands in April 2023 is inevitable, due to the renewal of my driving license and the renewal of my partner's residence permit.

Thanks in advance for the help.

You will first have to let your Non-immigrant OA visa expire before you can apply for a new Non-immigrant O visa. Also for a new Non-immigrant OA by the way.

By the way, you cannot convert a Non-immigrant OA into a Non-immigrant O in Thailand.

– You can apply for a Non-immigrant O Retired via the embassy and then you will have to provide insurance for the duration of three months. Just as it says. But you talk about a partner. If you have a Thai marriage, you can also apply for a Non-immigrant O Thai Marriage. Insurance is therefore not necessary.

– If you would later extend the period of stay in Thailand, insurance is no longer required. This means that you would only have to show compulsory insurance for applying for the Non-immigrant O Retired visa, ie that three months and not for the subsequent extensions in Thailand.

– However, if you continue with Non-immigrant OA, you will have to submit an insurance policy for a whole year and if you renew in Thailand, you will also have to submit an annual insurance policy there every year.

Do you think the choice was made quickly?

In the case of Non-immigrant O Retired once for three months and no longer for subsequent annual renewals, or the other option is annually for a Non-immigrant OA for the duration of one year at a time.

The choice is yours.

I do not comment on types of insurance and I think it has already been sufficiently covered by others.
