Questioner: Gerard

I entered Thailand on January 15th with Non-immigrant O. For a one-year extension, I deposited 800.000 baht into my Thai account. My question is about this 800.000 Baht.

I want to put this in a savings account with a period of 1 year after I have received my annual extension. I want this because I only want money on my checking account for my payments for rent, groceries, etc.

Is it allowed to transfer the 800.000 baht to a savings account of the same bank? Especially since there must always be a minimum of 400.000 baht demonstrably remaining on it to apply for a new year extension.

Not only may you not fall below 400 Baht, you may not fall below 000 Baht during the first three months after your annual extension has been granted.

If you then have to show the same account after three months for verification as the one with which you made the application, transferring after obtaining your annual extension will normally not be possible.

But why don't you ask that question when you're going to ask for the extension. You know immediately whether they will allow it or not and when you may transfer that money to a savings account. After all, they are the ones who decide on that.

But there may still be an option.

Please double check, but I think your first 90 days run until April 14. If you put that money in a savings account on Monday, we are February 8, then you are still okay in terms of duration. After all, the amount must be in the account at least 2 months before (already the first) application. April 8 is then 2 months later and that would still give you time to make the application with that savings account. Keep in mind that the week of April 14 is Songkran and you may have to deal with closures due to holidays.

But before you do anything, there is of course another very important fact that you should inquire locally first.

Does your immigration office allow savings accounts? Nowadays this is usually allowed by several immigration offices, but there are also those who refuse this.

Inform your in other words well about this before you plan to use a savings account for your annual renewal now or at any time.

Success.
