Schengen visa question: The costs for applying for a Schengen visa

Dear Editor/Rob V.,

The file also discusses, among other things, the costs of applying for a Schengen visa. I am Dutch and married to a Thai woman according to Thai law. If I (formally they themselves) want to apply for a visa for a holiday with me to the Netherlands, what are the costs?

I think I read that she is considered family and could therefore get a visa free of charge. Is this correct?

Dear Teun,

Since February 2, a visa costs 80 euros. Since that date, use of the third-party service provider VFS Global is also no longer a voluntary choice for regular applicants. So there is another 590 baht on top. Plus, of course, costs that you incur yourself to arrange various papers, the costs for medical travel insurance (think of a few euros per day) and plane ticket (500-800 euros?).

As a Dutch citizen, you are normally not covered by favorable EU legislation. A Dutch citizen who wants his Thai wife or husband to come to the Netherlands for a visit falls under the normal visa rules. Just like a Belgian who wants to bring his married partner over for a short stay in Belgium falls under the normal rules. The free visa with a minimum of paperwork is only valid if you and your wife apply for a visa at another embassy. For example, by making Belgium the main residence of your trip. Or you must have built up EU law in the past if you went to live in another EU country with your loved one.

But whatever you are planning, a short visit to the Netherlands, there are no special rules for you. If you still want to know more about this special visa, see page 24 of the Schengen file for a detailed explanation:
'What about special visas/procedures for family members of an EU/EEA national?'

The file can of course also help you on your way with an ordinary application for a visa to the Netherlands.

Regards,

Rob V

NB: New Schengen rules have been applicable since 2 February. Not much has changed (you can go earlier, a visa will cost you more money). An update of the file is ready, but is still missing the dots on the i.
