Bangkok backdrop for movie 'Only God Forgives'
Bangkok is the location for this new film full of violence and hatred by top Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn. He pushes the boundaries of neo noir in the masterfully directed Only God Forgives, starring Ryan Gosling.
In this film, Bangkok serves as a sinister backdrop, dotted with dimly lit streets, rooms and bars.
The story
Julian, an Englishman living in Bangkok, is a respected figure in the underworld. Together with his brother Billy, he runs a Thai boxing club that is in fact a front for drug smuggling to London. When Billy is murdered, their mother Jenna comes over from London to repatriate the body. Jenna herself is the head of a powerful criminal organization and is used to getting what she wants. And what she wants is to avenge her son's death.
In a bloody spiral of rage, betrayal and revenge, she hurtles towards the ultimate confrontation and the possibility of redemption.
