The hoteliers already hinted at this (see previous post): when Suvarnabhumi airport is down, air traffic to and from Thailand largely silent.

Don Mueang has only one terminal in use (out of three) and the airports in Chiang Mai and Phuket are already experiencing congestion.

Naval airport U-Tapao Pattaya International Airport is also not a realistic option; it can only handle 3000 passengers per day, while Suvarnabhumi handles 110.000 international and 28.000 domestic passengers per day. In addition, there are not enough machines to scan luggage and passengers.

U-Tapao was previously used as an alternative when Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang were occupied by the Yellowshirts in late 2008, but that led to chaotic scenes.

Udom Tantiprasongthai, chief executive of Orient Thai, is concerned that international airlines will reduce or cancel flights to Bangkok in the absence of an airport within reasonable distance of Bangkok that could serve as an alternative.

If the SUV breaks down, the turnips are done and Thailand will be presented with the bill. The chaos is then incalculable. Perhaps the earthen walls can keep the runways free of water, but it is hardly possible to get there. Chiang Mai and Phuket are an alternative on paper, but - apart from the distance to Bangkok and the logistical problems - all Thai airports have insufficient space to park, supply or fuel aircraft. The experience at U Tapao at the end of 2008 taught me that (I hope).
In short: if the SUV closes, it will be the end of the exercise for the time being; no tourist or traveler can then enter or leave. What a loss of face…..

you can turn it or turn it as you want.
You can't stop water, it finds its way. You are powerless, and the problem in Thailand is that it just keeps on raining.
assuming the dry season starts in november, i assume everything will be dry in january.
09012012 I will leave for Bangkok if everything goes well, and hopefully I won't be standing with my feet in the water.

Are those Russians all lucky, all those flights land at U tapao. Get cozy in Pattaya.

I am leaving with my girlfriend next Friday (28/10) for a few days to Bangkok and then we will fly through nr Phuket… The only concern is getting everywhere safely and not getting stuck… and of course this misery is also quickly over before the locals…

Pfff, hopefully this will work out because we need a carefree holiday 🙂

You don't have to worry about that because I read today that bookings to Thailand are being canceled en masse by the people. Too bad for Thailand but reality.
