The Thai travel industry has appealed to the government for more workers for the tourism sector. This call is prompted by the increasing numbers of foreign visitors coming to Thailand.

Thongyoo Suphavittayakorn, board member of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), reported a record number of foreign tourists from late last year to Songkran 2013, the traditional Thai New Year.

“If foreign tourists keep coming with these numbers, Thailand should expect a 15 to 20 percent increase this year,” he said. Suphavittayakorn is particularly concerned about insufficient facilities and staff to handle this influx.

Bangkok, Pattaya, Krabi, Hua Hin, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai are the most popular destinations among tourists. Most foreign tourists come from China, followed by Russia, Japan, South Korea, India, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Suvarnabhumi Airport is also creaking at the seams. Last year, more than 51 million passengers were processed. This number is likely to rise to 2013 million in 55. The national airport is designed for a maximum of 45 million passengers per year
