Dear readers,

My name is Fleur and I am 21 years old and love Thailand. I would like to learn Thai cooking. At the beginning of July I will be in Bangkok near Ka0 San Road, is there somewhere I can go for a course?

Greetings,

Flower

    Hi Fleur,

I'm sure there will be something in the vicinity of Khaosan.
Personally, I don't like that area very much and therefore hardly ever go there.

You can also learn a lot by taking a look at the street food restaurants.
I myself do the following: if I like a certain dish somewhere (it is often just not right) then I first come to eat a few times so that they know my face and then ask if I can watch in the kitchen. Sometimes for a fee, usually not. I speak Thai so that makes it a little easier.

In touristic places there are often several cooking classes that usually cost 1000-1500 baht where you learn to cook 2 to 3 dishes. Only you don't know if they really cook well there, but that is also personal of course. I would start figuring things out myself with different channels on Youtube. Then you can also better compare what you really like. Good luck and happy holidays!

    Bo

    Don't FLEUR,

Go to Chiang Mai, possibly with AirAsia there and back, costs no turd,
There you learn "real" Thai cooking
mail. to the Dutch Guesthouse, [email protected]

These have good overnight stays and a laundry list of cooking schools.

First of all, you are not the only Dutchman.

Just google “cooking schools in Thailand” or something like that. There are plenty, especially in Pattaya and Bangkok.

    Hi Fleur,

Had a huge fun cooking workshop on the corner.
It is given by an Indian man who has a hostel, a restaurant, a travel agency and therefore a cooking workshop.
You go to the market with him and the workshop itself is given by an elderly Thai lady.

On google maps it is in the building of rest inn Dormitory.

    Have fun!!

Maliwan cooking class. Nice young woman, first with tuk tuk to the market, shopping and then cooking your dishes. Clear explanation, good preparation and in the middle of Khao San road.

    Hi Fleur,

You can follow many courses in Thailand and there is a huge range.
In the touristic parts there are even hotels that offer it.
I only know Kao San for a nice night out and I can't give you any advice on that.

Cooking is my profession and that is why I have followed various courses in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and at friends' homes.
It is my advice that you first have to make a choice between 'Street Food' dishes and the 'Higher Segment' dining.

The cheapest course is to make a home movie of the countless preparations of the Streedfood Vendors and then go to the market in the morning to look for those special ingredients for the tastiest dishes. Don't forget that back in NL you can't always match the same romantic environment / temperature.

The local 'Cooking school' is very popular as a tourist venue in every neighbourhood/city/country and easy to find. These are reasonable in terms of price / quality if you shop and you learn a few dishes. Nothing wrong with it.

The highest segment is the oldest cooking school in Bangkok: The blue Elephant. They offer various options. From a one-day group course to a professional private course of a week or more. I followed this course for two weeks and was also allowed to work for a few days in their production company that provides care for many upscale events. Fascinating to experience.

All where to money. I wish you a lot of fun with your journey of discovery and next time also try the cuisine of Cambodia, Viet Nam. Although these countries are neighbours, the difference between the cuisines and tastes is remarkable.

    Safe travels! (and eat tasty)
